Lord Of The Rings: Gollum developers issue apology regarding state of game

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum launched the other day on the Nintendo Switch and other platforms with little to no fanfare, in fact the biggest noise about the game stemmed from the fact that it is one of the worst reviewed games of 2023, with an average score of 36/100 on Metacritic based on 35 reviews. Clearly this is an embarrassment to the developer’s, Daedalic Entertainment, and they have therefore published a statement to social media saying that they “deeply regret that the game did not meet the expectations we set for ourselves or for our dedicated community” and asking those who purchased the game to “accept our sincere apologies for any disappointment this may have caused.” You can read the development team’s full statement below.

Dear players,

“We would like to sincerely apologize for the underwhelming experience many of you have had with The Lord of Ring: Gollum™ upon its release. We acknowledge and deeply regret that the game did not meet the expectations we set for ourselves or for our dedicated community. 1. Thankfully i went with my better judgement and didn’t purchase Lord of The Rings Gollum, why don’t they just issue refunds and delist the game until it’s in a playable state.

      1. No. Game developers need games. Good games. So they can sell them for money.

They shouldn’t get the money unless they give a good game.

  2. Why release it then if it’s so badly performing.
Oh because it has a well known title and thousands will rush out and get it on release so profits can be made. Then, and only then we’ll apologise for its bad state, too late we have your money now. They should be sued!

  3. They all knew the game is going to be a complete disaster. This is why rushing games is just badly poor for the companies reception. I’m guessing people are going to asked for a refund for this unethical experience for a unfinished game.

  4. They have been hyping this game up for so long and trying to get people excited for it… they knew it was trash. They were just crossing their fingers on release.

    🙄

It honestly never looked impressive to me. So, I am not shocked. These developers likely bit off far more than they could chew. But, not being wise developers, they did not reevaluate the scope of the project, they just continued pushing forward on a game they were never capable of delivering.

That is my take. I am very curious to see what the YouTube channel ‘Wha Happun?’ finds out about this games’ development.

  5. That’s stupid. Delay the game, fix the bugs.

Tears of the Kingdom was in polish mode for over a year. Seems it was well worth it.

    1. Actually TOTK should’ve been released for the holidays. That still wouldn’ve given time to polish things and as it was they still needed to ‘fix’ the item duplication glitch.

  6. An undercooked game that isn’t fun, lacks vision and is full of game breaking bugs in 2023? With an apology and the promise to fix things through patches too? And the game will likely never be the promising experience the original game was meant to be? This is a first! I’ve never seen these series of events unfold with a modern video game release…

  7. The entire global industry is broken which the p(l)andemic further cemented it in showing us how reliant we are on China. Japan is about to go to war with most of their funding towards military purposes meaning it won’t take much for things to go sideways there which will affect Nintendo and Sony (if they are still Japanese based) I haven’t payed much attention to Sony in a decade but it seems their recent showcase from news articles and RGT85 is pretty bad. Nintendo is in a tight corner also and they had spent a bunch of money on their theme park.

    Not good.

  8. They are not sorry they did it, they are sorry they got caught. This isnt 1985, you cant pull this kind of crappy brand video game stuff. Maybe if they go out of business they will learn their lesson.
