Rumour claims Nintendo could announce next system at Gamescom this month

A little known site called Start Menu claims that their sources have aligned with the information presented by VGC sources earlier this week stating that the successor to the Nintendo Switch is due for release in second half of 2024 and that developers already have kits for game development purposes. The interesting thing is that the site claims that their sources also told them that Nintendo could announce the existence of the next generation console during Gamescom 2023. Their source isn’t clear whether that means at the Gamescom event itself or during a Nintendo Direct presentation during Gamescom week. It sounds a little far fetched, but it is generally hard to predict what Nintendo will do. Gamescom kick-off 23rd August – 27th August.

  1. The only way that would make sense is if they did a reveal video on that following week, I don’t think it makes sense to reveal it at gamescom, e3 is gone and Nintendo does a great job when it releases new content on social media period.

  2. The only thing that would definitely make sense is for them tease the codename for the system on one of their Twitter post. That’s what they will announce the next system if we get a confirmation from them only.

  3. Only chance this happens is if the system will be backwards compatible with Switch games and they lean into that as a selling point. Otherwise, announcing this system ahead of the rest of the switch games coming out this year just doesn’t make any sense.

  4. If the release really is second half next year, I honestly don’t expect Nintendo to confirm the console until after the holiday season is over to maximise Switch sales over that period. If the release were more aligned with the original Switch release of March, then sure, I would expect an announcement reasonably imminently.

Gamescom has not historically been a venue for major announcements so I would be very surprised if that was where Switch 2 was announced. But could it be in a Direct somewhat aligned with the timings of Gamescom? Sure.

Whilst I think Nintendo are right to double down on the Switch concept for the next console if that’s what they’re doing, what the rumours seem to be missing is a distinct hook for the next console. Now, the same but more powerful is by no means a bad idea (and is what Sony and Microsoft have been doing for generations). However, it doesn’t seem to be within Nintendo’s MO. I think there’s going to be something more to it – something that so far has not leaked.

  5. Why would they want to announce it this early? It would ruin Mario Wonder sales and it would hype people up too early. This is obviously fake. I think the very earliest we could hear about this from Nintendo is in the Summer Direct next year. But I still think they would want to wait till fall next year instead to build up hype closer to release like they did with the Switch.

  6. This makes no sense as Nintendo live in Seattle is a week later. If anything they will announce then not at an obscure gaming convention.

  7. This is like saying water is wet. They announced they would be at this event. They wouldn’t do that if they didn’t have something to announce.
