Universo Nintendo is reporting today that Nintendo has started to restrict purchases on the eShop from other countries where gamers can purchase the digital games at a lower price than their own country, such as Argentina and Turkey. The editor in chief of the publication has posted a screenshot of a error message he received from Nintendo Argentina that the payment method or credit card needs to be issued by that particular country. Users will be greeted with error code 2813-2470 if they try to purchase something from the Argentinian eShop without having a bank card or gift card registered for that particular country.
“The payment methods available for making purchases in the Nintendo eShop in a particular country may be restricted to payment methods or credit cards issued in that country. For example, a credit card issued in Mexico will not work in the Nintendo eShop in Argentina.”

Always thought that digital marketplaces like the Eshop or the PlayStation Store was region restricted and/or region locked. If you purchase a Eshop card or PSN card it’s only compatible for the region it was purchased in. If you have a Japanese Alt account you need a card specifically for the Japanese digital marketplace, i thought this was already a thing.
Games are compatible between different accounts even tho the game itself is from a different country, however a season pass isn’t compatible only if you purchased the dlc individually as stand alone content then it would be compatible between different accounts.
Yeah, I was always under the impression that all digital goods were region locked. I was listening to a recent episode of the IGN Nintendo podcast and Peer (the founder of IGN) brought that up as well. That he’s always had to have a Japanese credit card to buy all his games on his Japanese eShop.
I thought this was already a thing and people were using pre-paid eshop cards to buy outside their region
Japanese Nintendo eShop still allows other countries to use and buy games on it but using local international credit cards on it won’t work..You need to buy Japanese Yen eShop cards to purchase games on it.
Never bought games from Turkey and Argentina as the games there are similar to my existing American Nintendo eShop account.
It wasn’t about the games, but about the prices.
This has always been the case for Argentina and Mexico. This isn’t new
The twitter above is from a Brazilian, and as a Brazilian myself I can say that we used this trick a lot. All digital games that I own I bought where it was cheapest. There is a website that ranks a game according to price tag accross all e-shops, so it was pretty easy to check where to buy it from.
My online store was under some weird restrictions some time ago too. I remember I was sitting in the office staring at the May payment failure report where declines suddenly hit 34% and realised my shop was losing about $3200 a week. I checked payments orchestrationservice that pulls all payment channels into one place set up routing switched on a backup provider for overloads and wow the conversion jumped to 72% in three days. Would you trust a system to choose the transaction path or keep hunting errors manually in hundreds of logs?
