Nintendo president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has spoken to the NHK about the company’s continued research into new technology. Mr. Furukawa says that they don’t seek “technologies for novelty’s sake” but examine and study them to see if they could lead to a “revolution” in terms of how gamers experience the medium of video games, as they ultimately want to offer customers something that is both “fresh and surprising.”
“While there is no particular technology we are focusing on at the moment, we are conducting research on a variety of new technologies. However, I believe the most important thing for our company is not seeking new technologies for novelty’s sake, but rather considering how they can lead to revolutions in the act of play itself. The idea is that if we become convinced that incorporating a certain technology can provide customers with a fresh and surprising experience, then we covet its research more strongly, making investments when necessary as well.”

I would like the autostereoscopic 3D on my switch please. Thank you.
People always said they felt “straaaange and diiiiizzy” when using it. They don’t know that it was something that disappears after a while when you use it constantly, and never happens again. Blame them for always using 2D on 3DS, for stopping the 3D momentum, and maybe for making it never come back again. I will always hate them for that.
Same thing they’ve said for ages now.
This is related to the next gen system right?
Uh oh, that’s not a good sign. This could lead to a more gimmicky next gen system. The Switch worked because the gimmick wasn’t really a gimmick at all. The hybrid nature of the Switch was convenient, but games would still play traditionally (most of the time). If this next device is more like the Wii, this could be disastrous. The Wii caught on simply because of its great timing. Its a stunt that won’t likely be successful a second time. The weird technology was eye catching enough at the time and they were the first one’s out the gate with motion controls (to my knowledge). It was a moment when the planets aligned.
If the next platform is just as experimental, unless its something that truly changes things up in unique and refreshing ways, this is going to be a disaster. I would much rather them make another hybrid with no additional bells and whistles. Have it with Joy-Con that don’t have drift. Have it be about as strong as the Steam Deck. Make it fully backwards compatible with Switch games. And price it at $400. Do this and it will be very successful! Maybe not as successful as the Switch, but it will be one of their more profitable platforms of all time.
@ChaosInvoker
You don’t like gimmicks which means you don’t like the PS5 since that is a gimmick. Popping off the side panels and replacing it with a custom ones are a gimmick, the Dual Sense is a gimmick, being able to install an M.2 is a gimmick. Playing games with ray tracing is a gimmick. Video game consoles are a gimmick, have been since it’s inception. Video games are interactive “movies” which makes them a gimmick. I like how people bash Nintendo for being “gimmicky” but forget that all video game platforms including PC are gimmicks. The Steam Deck is a gimmick, it’s a gaming laptop in a handheld form factor. At the end of the day as long as Nintendo makes games for whatever they make I don’t care if it’s too gimmicky or less gimmicky. I don’t care if their next controller are @$$less chaps (you can thank ReviewTechUSA for that), I care about playing games. Side note: VR is a gimmick and it’s glorified motion controls. If it doesn’t use motion controls then explain the flailing?
I’d like to separate this into two categories practical gimmicks and non-practical gimmicks. Practical gimmicks enhance the overall experience without being intrusive to gameplay, such as being able to change the plates of a PS5 or the ability to seamlessly go from console play to handheld play and vise versa with the Switch. Non-practical gimmicks are ones that are more invasive such as the Wii’s motion controls, which were shoehorned into most games on the Wii’s 1st party games.
Sometimes gimmicks like the motion controls used in aiming a bow and arrow in Tears of the Kingdom complement gameplay. But then that maze puzzle in Breath of the Wild (you know the one) was obnoxious and irritating. I just want the next platform to handle the next generation in a less intrusive way. If it complements gameplay or isn’t used at all most of the time, this won’t be an issue. On the other hand if they introduce some weird new controller and force the majority of their 1st party games to focus around its odd new way of gameplay it would be problematic.
Incredibly disingenuous. Nintendo frequently make hardware that preclude any kind of backwards compatibility or translation of universal video game language.
Bikes with bells and whistles are not the same as unicycles.
I just want to play Nintendo Games with Modern Hardware, Performance, and Graphics, None of us bought Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild for the Gyro Controls Those Gimmicks Come at the cost of Sacrifices, I don’t like them. Most buy Nintendo Consoles for the Games and Most don’t even fully take advantage of Gimmicks and I don’t want them to. I want Nintendo Games with Modern Visuals and Gameplay and Normal Controls that don’t Drift. The only Gimmick I can see myself getting into is VR and Nintendo isn’t going to invest the money in the proper tech for that.
I rather have a normal console with the best controller created in gaming history , in other words the Snes controller that Sony and Microsoft improved on. With actual games and third party support! And yes graphics and power do add to the overal experience and gameplay. Beautiful looking worlds make you feel more immersed into the game and power also allows for more gameplay options and smooth gameplay. Imagine Breath of the Wild but than it doesn’t look like a gamecube game and The world is more fleshed out , more npc’s quests , story ect. stuff to do.
Also tired of buying Nintendo consoles for 5-10 games and getting the middle finger cause all the other great stuff is on other platforms cause Nintendo can’t handle it. Also before people bring up the Nintendo is doing fine looking at the numbers argument , I don’t care i’m sure they can make a console that cater’s to litte children , mothers and actual gamers.
Nintendo should realize that their revolutionary approach for new systems will likely meet a dead end – where further steps in that pathway would, in retrospect, be degenerate. Keep it simple, as far as video games industry – gain access to the raw material available and configure it in a way to package it in a $300 bundle sooner than anybody else. Other systems burn through upgrades too often that their “obsolete” tech parts could be resembled by Nintendo to fit into their licenses. If the next system might cost $400 – maybe nintendo should refrain from it – and focus on other ways to sell more of the existing systems that keep to the $300 limit. I have a switch OLED with SSBU – it still slams, arguably better than some competition – and I have no complaints for what it is capable of.
Adding an overhead projector to the Switch 2 would be epic. And be able to have more apps like Disney + Netflix and of course games and other apps downloaded. People would love to be able to buy a Switch 2 with that feature.
Then 4 to 8 players can actually play a console without a TV. 4K probably would make this too expensive so 1080P overhead projector with available 4K for Switch in different features.
Also Switch 3 needs some features the Wii U had such as Miiverse, also I liked the remote control to the TV to turn up volume and off and on the TV.
I hope the GuiliKit Pro controller, which I love, will be able to work the Switch 2. I also hope the Switch Pro Controller too.
Look at their history. They won’t release the Switch 2 that everyone wants, they’ll release a Switch-U instead.
