Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 Switch previews appear to be mixed

Fans of the acclaimed Metal Gear Solid franchise are undoubtedly looking forward to getting their hands on the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 which contains Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 along with the classic Metal Gear NES games. The presentation of the collection appears to be second to none, with lots of intricate detail and concise information about each classic game. Interestingly, it was the Nintendo Switch version of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 which was played by previewers in L.A. Where things become mixed is that the collection’s games run at 720p and 30fps on Nintendo’s current platform, but there are some frame rate issues encountered by the previewers which one would hope will be fixed when the collection releases on 24th October.

“Don’t go into Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 expecting a breakthrough compilation. Quality-of-life features, such as the ability to rewind mid-game, weren’t seen in our time with the collection, and, as noted, there aren’t as many extras as one might want from one of gaming history’s landmark franchises. Still, this is shaping up to be a decent collection for anybody looking for the first three MGS games in a single place, along with a few fun extras and Snake’s 8-bit past.”

“To start, it’s worth pausing to note just how many Metal Gear games this includes. The 8-bit Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, along with the off-brand Snake’s Revenge, together serve as a virtual museum of the series’ deepest roots. The three MGS games are nicely preserved and given a clean and sleek UI menu to navigate the games and their various extras. The games themselves are essentially untouched, with a presentation similar to the PS3’s HD Editions. There is a brief content warning at the start of every game, noting that some elements may be insensitive by today’s standards, but other than that they appear to be direct transfers of the original content. Naturally, the UI has been touched up as well to correspond with the modern controllers. I played the compilation on Nintendo Switch.”

“That cuts both ways. Those looking for a more full-fledged facelift will have to wait for Delta to present serious revisions to MGS3. And these being re-releases without significant visual upgrades, the graphics do show their age. Snake’s character model looks virtually faceless in Metal Gear Solid, and it stands out more than ever with a sharp output on modern screens.”

“Indeed, when you take into account that it’s also possible to install different regional versions of each of the games, the Master Collection comes in at around 80 GB in total – in other words, more than a base Switch or even the OLED model can hold without a Micro SD card. It’s because of this that the Master Collection is deliberately compartmentalised, not just on the Switch but other platforms too – there’s an app icon for each MGS game, an app for the first two 8-bit Metal Gear games together and then one for all the other bonus content.Essentially, instead of having the whole collection as one ‘game’, everything is installed as an individual title with its own game icon on the Switch, which makes sense given that it’s going to be possible to buy each game individually as well. We’re also told that the physical Switch game card will come with the first Metal Gear Solid and bonus content such as the 8-bit games, but the other titles will need to be downloaded.”
