It seems as though the long-awaited Super Mario Wonder will feature some form of online play as the official game site for Super Mario Wonder states that “details of online play will be announced at a later date.” It is not clear what form the online play in the incredibly vibrant Super Mario Wonder will take. Obviously we are all crossing our fingers for online co-operative play, which would be an absolute blast. Alternatively, online play could consist of various mini games, which could be played online. At present it is not clear, though we should know fairly soon as Super Mario Wonder launches on Nintendo Switch this October.

Super Mario maker 2 had this same issue where the online was change to be with anyone instead of friends on your friend list I believe.
