Smash Bros creator unsure if future Smash Bros game could ever match Ultimate’s Scope

Characters from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Switch

There can be no doubt that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch family of systems was one content-packed video game. Inevitably, another Smash Bros. game will be made in the future. However, series creator Masahiro Sakurai has said in a new video that he is doubtful that a new Smash Bros. game could live up to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in terms of the amount of content and ideas. He says he is not sure what comes next for the beloved Nintendo franchise. Though he did conclude by saying that every time he has worked on a Smash Bros. game, he has never thought he would surpass its predecessor in terms of ideas and content. Here’s what Mr. Sakurai said:

“As for what comes next for the Smash Bros. series, even I’m not sure. I feel we truly succeeded in making people happy with this game, but now that Smash Bros. has grown to be monstrous in size, I’d say it’s difficult to imagine an increase of this magnitude happening again.

“Every time, we managed to make a game that I had previously thought impossible, so I can’t say for certain there won’t be another, but I do think it would be difficult to push it any further than we have.”

  1. Smash Bros. Ultimate has became the biggest milestone in the series history. It is going to be hard to make such a content like that again In the next installment. I know it won’t be like Ultimate, but it’s going to be very much different from that game.

  2. It’ll get an upgraded port on Switch 2, similar to how Ultimate is an upgraded port of the Wii U version and added in content from previous games.

  3. Smash ultimate was great but the single player “story mode” was very disappointing. Was expecting much more effort. Nothing beats the subspace emissary. I mean the opening video was great but then there was nothing of substance. It made killing the final boss… underwhelming.

  4. Most of us expect a series refresh. Older characters get an updated moveset, the roster is cut down to 30~40 characters, more focus on better visuals. Another major thing I’d like to see is improved game mechanics like fewer characters with counter moves, counters have a smaller window for success, slower projectiles, smaller attacks so every attack can be side-dodged, less landing lag, less charge time for smash attacks, faster falling, and adjustable shields return. Add much needed tech, like adding the ability to attack out of a teleport for Mewtwo, be able to air dodge when using slow recoveries like Villager’s balloon Up B or King K. Rool’s propeller recovery, have the option to shield or dodge after landing, and be able to cancel a taunt. If these kind of changes and more were implemented the next game would be better than Ultimate regardless of not having as much content.

  5. Less emphasis on building the biggest roster and more emphasis on some kind of story mode please. They also need to start over with what third party characters should be included other than Sonic, Mega Man and possibly Pac-Man. Maybe this time they will include Crash Bandicoot. Hell, maybe even break tradition and bring in characters not from video games like Kid Goku. Mortal Kombat does it! Who knows though. They probably won’t do this.

      1. Anime characters are seriously a toss up, most anime characters are licenced to Namco, but there’s too many hands in that pot to be even viable. But crash is definitely possible. It belongs to MS now, and they are very Nintendo friendly. Hell, even Spyro could make it over.

  6. They should just make Melee 2 for the next one. Smaller roster and tight mechanics. Easy for anyone to get into, tons of depth for anyone who wants it. And please, no input buffer.
