Reviving the magic: The StreetPass revival for Nintendo 3DS fans

In a heartwarming display of nostalgia and dedication, a group of avid 3DS players has breathed new life into a beloved, but long-forgotten, Nintendo feature. StreetPass, the charming Mii avatar exchange system that once fostered a unique social experience among 3DS owners, has found a devoted following even in the age of more modern gaming consoles like the Switch and Steam Deck. Dedicated fans of the 3DS have recently united in various gatherings to relive the magic of trading StreetPass “tags” with like-minded enthusiasts. With the upcoming “StreetPass Halloween” events, participants are encouraged to revive the spirit of this beloved feature by keeping their 3DS systems active and ready to mingle, be it while trick-or-treating or leisurely cruising through town.

Shane Kressley, known online as StreetPassLove and an advocate for the 3DS community, highlighted the enduring charm of the 3DS and the unique connection it fostered among players. Recalling the days when chance encounters in school hallways would yield a handful of StreetPass tags, Kressley emphasized the longing for the special feeling that once accompanied these random exchanges. With the waning popularity of the 3DS following the rise of the Switch, Kressley took it upon himself to organize StreetPass events, providing a much-needed focal point for the 3DS community to come together once more.

  1. StreetPass was, unironically, one of my favorite parts of the 3DS! I vividly remember excitedly digging it out of my pocket to check it every time I was on a trip to a busy area so that I could check the ten people I’d passed and get ten new ones already! Completing those puzzles after weeks or months of passing people felt like winning a game in and of itself!

I would absolutely love it if they brought a feature like this back for the Switch. I know that it wouldn’t be anywhere near as practical, but I think it would be a lovely little option! Especially considering that they have a model of the Switch that’s literally designed to be mobile only and played on the go, it seems like it would make sense to include a feature like this. I can dream, right?
