The Nintendo Switch has a ridiculously large instal base and not everyone has shifted over to the newer Nintendo Switch 2, which has recently been announced to be getting a price increase. Speaking to investors Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has hinted to them that it plans to maintain support for the Nintendo Switch while consumers dither about whether to upgrade. Nintendo Patents Watch says that they suspect that Nintendo’s acquisition of Shiver Entertainment and their investment in Forever Entertainment were part of the plan to further extend original Nintendo Switch support.
“it is important […] to expand the entire software business […] instead of focusing only on [NS2] software.”
“encourage people to transition to Nintendo Switch 2 at their own pace […] increase the Nintendo Switch 2 installed base over the medium to long term”

Broke boys… we may have won…
This is actually good. Sony and MS need to realize this. They are in the same boat
I like this… there’s still a lot of potential with the Switch 1, for a few years, maybe. Not enough to carry the company, but for smaller budget releases, they make much more sense on Switch 1 while Switch 2 gets the big heavy duty system sellers and remakes. That’s not to mention any Switch 1 game will also benefit Switch 2, thanks to backwards compatibility & performance enhancements.
Games like Rhythm Heaven Groove & Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream are a perfect fit for the console, especially with its massive install base. Slowly transitioning more people to upgrade while keeping the Switch 1 supported for a while is a good move.
For example, Wind Waker HD & Twilight Princess HD both make perfect sense with the Zelda Movie & Zelda 40th Anniversary next year/late this year before the holiday season, right? But just putting the HD games on Switch 2 wouldn’t fit right. Doing something similar to Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2, and releasing both separately physically on Switch 1, while having a free update on Switch 2 for 4K 60FPS, that would be a dream come true. I feel besides Ocarina of Time Remake on Switch 2, we’ll be seeing a lot of support for the franchise on Switch 1.
Personally, I think A Link Between Worlds Remastered for Switch 1 would be fantastic. With the movie coming out, I suspect they’ll capitalize on the attention by doing a lot of Zelda releases like they did with Mario and the Galaxy Movie.
A lot of potential in the Switch 1, still. I like it— it’ll compliment gaps in the Switch 2 due to longer dev cycles, in a way where we’re getting more than just Nintendo Switch 2 Editions and 3rd partys (though those are still amazing, as well)
I can see how you can still survive off an original switch. There are still great indie games and smaller nintendo games releasing. This is a great motive! Hopefully more companies do it, like xbox.
a lot of people on my friends list still play on Switch 1 and have yet to upgrade to Switch 2….so I am not surprised at this…
The title of this article is awful lmao
So Switch 2 won’t sell enough units to sell enough games, thanks Switch 1 f*ker.
The original Switch has some potential left for its life cycle. I know everyone doesn’t have the new and powerful Switch 2 yet because of the price but I can understand the gesture for all this price increase because they know that Microsoft and Sony are in the same position as them. I also have a friend who doesn’t want to get the Switch 2 due to its updated user agreement back in May 2025. He doesn’t want to waste money for the new system because of it.
Basically all the systems have similar user agreements. Sony can brick your system. Since ps3 i think.
I was super ready for the Switch 2 for years, got one early on. The screen is ass, so far there’s nothing I wanna play on it besides Switch 1 games with slightly better framerates and dynamic resolutions, and now Nintendo’s signaling that they’re even less keen on delivering a reason for me to have upgraded. Sheesh…
On one hand, got mine before the price increases, but on the other, the handheld screen is ghosty/laggy enough that I never use it in handheld mode, Switch 1 was a better handheld. Hm.
Ya the screen ghosts a bit playing side scrollers, Nothing crazy. I played cyberpunk banaza mk world on it handheld was fine.
I have too much to play. Beat re 7 8 9, playing mouse pi atm. Still need to start pragmata, indy, and outlaws and yakuza 0 I bought at launch. While playing galaxy 1,2. Having to work full time sucks.
What is wrong with the screen? I have been using it for almost a year and I noticed no problems with the screen.
👍
Last November share meet they said “Going forward, Nintendo will shift its primary development focus to Nintendo Switch 2 and expand its business around the new platform.” So is primary focus now being split with Switch?
I haven’t upgraded and still buy games for it and indie games
