Miyamoto says he has absolutely no plans to retire

The Guardian has had the opportunity to chat with the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, and the conversation eventually got round to asking him if he has any plans at all to enter retirement. Mr. Miyamoto said that he has absolutely no plans to enter retirement, but he did say that he “thinks about things in a five-year timespan” and therefore sometimes thinks about who he can pass things onto in case something happens.

I think I already know how Miyamoto will reply when I ask him if he’s ever tempted to retire. Sure enough, he has no plans to do so; he still loves what he does. “More so than retiring, I’m thinking about the day I fall  over,” he says, with a smile. “In this day and age you have to think about things in a five-year timespan, so I do think about who I can pass things on to, in case something does happen.

“I’m really thankful that there is so much energy around things that I have worked on. These are things that have already gone out into the world … they’ve been cultivated by others, other people have been raising them, helping them grow, so in that sense I don’t feel too much ownership over them any more.”

  1. Well, the man is in his prime and I understand that he has no plans to retire anytime soon. But time sometimes knows the answer when he will plan on doing so. I’m pretty sure Mr Miyamoto will pass his creations and projects to the most trusted person if something happens to him.

  2. Good so what’s the excuse why the Switch didn’t get Tropical Freeze 2? And where is Yoshi’s Wooy World 3? The Sequel was worked on immediately. So why didn’t yall immediately get started on 3rd one? How old the Switch is, had they worked on games immediately the Switch could have gotten 3 games off the same franchises.

    1. As far as those ideas go:

We already have Yoshi’s Crafted World. Where do you go from there? Unless it’s a 3D platformer starring Yoshi, Birdo, and Baby Mario/Luigi/Peach/Daisy.
I would like them to gives us the definitive version of DKCR, instead of fumbling around with the Wii’s controls or having the 3DS’ fine-tuned controls and extra stages locked to smaller resolution and dinky hardware that’s falling apart.

    2. Donkey Kong Country returns is a Retro Studios series and Yoshi’s Woolly World/Crafted World are Good-Feel games. Retro has allegedly had a lot of issues lately, and last we knew they were working on Metroid Prime 4. Additionally, Good-Feel as of late has been self-publishing games. There’s you’re excuses. Literally nothing to do with Miyamoto.

  3. Yes, Eurogamer has a similar article from December 9 2011 titled “Miyamoto says im healthy and don’t plan on retiring anytime soon”

  4. The man created many of gaming’s biggest series, like Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. He has my respect.

…Buuuuuuuuut maybe recognize that not every game needs a gimmick slapped onto it. Star Fox Zero says “hi”.

    1. Not to being disrespectful toward the late Iwata but forcing the gamepad gimmicks were mainly his orders, of course Miyamoto is responsible too but you gotta admire him for taking the blame and of course some of Miyamoto’s ideas don’t click with everyone (wii music).

  5. i was born in 1985. my earliest memories are from about three years old playing video games. Pitfall (2600) and Super Mario Bros. (NES). Mario and Luigi and Co. have been with me ever since. im not really ready to think about Shigeru Miyamoto not being around
