Golden Sun & Golden Sun: The Lost Age coming to Switch Online + Expansion Pack next week

You may recall that, earlier today, leaker Pyoro teased on Twitter that there would be news of a game that would be added to Nintendo‘s Game Boy Advance Switch Online + Expansion Pack game library. It wasn’t known what, exactly, the game would be. It was also unknown when the game would be added.

Well, not only has Pyoro’s tease been officially confirmed, but there’s actually multiple games confirmed. Nintendo has announced that Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age will be coming to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on January 17th. Nintendo of America tweeted the news on their official Twitter account, so you can see their tweet down below.

  1. Now the question becomes can we link the first game’s save directly to the second game wirelessly or will we HAVE to use the code? I REALLY hope I don’t have to use the code. 😭 I will if I have to, though. 🤷

    1. There’s no link cable emulation as of now. That may change in the future, I can almost guarantee that Nintendo is hoping to add the Pokemon games to NSO eventually, and it wouldn’t make much sense to release those with the ability to battle and trade gutted out. Although they did release Stadium without transfers, so who knows.

      1. You know, its possible that they might add the transfer mode into that game once they added Pokémon GBA games on the Switch Online expansion pack. But, this could happen eventually. I mean, I seen other games in the Switch online on GBA don’t have transfers.

        1. I think if it does happen, we’re likely to see an announcement of it on Pokemon day. If it doesn’t happen next month, we’re likely going to be waiting an entire year for it..

      2. There actually is a sort of link cable emulation for GBA (I dunno about GB or GBC though). There’s a very specific order that you have to do to connect everyone, but it’s possible via online play for games like Mario Kart Super Circuit, Mario Bros. Multiplayer (the side game in the Super Mario Advance series), and I think a few others.

I don’t know how the link cable features worked in the Golden Sun games, so maybe it won’t work on NSO

        1. Huh, now I just wonder how this is going to work. You can’t put your profile on two separate systems, can you? Doesn’t that mean you need to effectively have two different systems, two accounts under the paid service, and you can’t even use the same account that you used on the first game if you wish to play the second game with your saved data using this method?

          1. Hm, I guess so. Maybe it’s possible to share the data back and forth with a friend? I’ll admit it’s still not an elegant system, but I’m not sure what else they can do without doing a complete overhaul to the NSO system

    2. I really hope we don’t have to use a code. It was a nightmare when I was younger. Eventually, I realized I was getting lowercase t and + mixed up so… there’s a tip for anyone who has to do this.

      1. Having to use codes like this where I have to make sure to differentiate between characters without context made it so much fun. My teachers would ask me why a lower case t would have a bit of a curve on the bottom, or a lower case o at the top. Meanwhile, I had to do trial and error with a default router password, because the font they used made the uppercase i and lowercase L identical…

  2. I’m happy for you, Golden Sun fans. I’ve never played the second game and got stuck early in the first when I bought it on Wii U VC, but I’ll be giving them another shot when they hit the Switch.

  3. Strange got golden eye in January last year, and now golden sun in January this year, hopefully DK 64 next year (golden banana reference).

  4. The thing that takes all the joy away from me with announcements like these, is the fact those games are locked behind a subscription paywall.

For me, just giving any company my money and letting them decide my ownership of the “products I buy” with that money is disgusting to me. All they do is take all the money, throw us in a ditch the moment you can’t/won’t pay anymore, and in the end, you stand with nothing – and they have it all.

And like, the difference between this and something like Netflix or Spotify, is that movies and music are still sold both digitally and physically officially – brand new – from retailers. Nintendo on the other hand is creating a demand for these games by closing down 3DS/Wii U eShops and forcing us over to a subscription service.

I really don’t like Switch Online, with things like weird rules of not backing up certain games and all its paywalls. Lucky for me, I actually have working copies of those two games, and means to play the cartridges still; but I’m privileged to have it like that. Too bad a lot of people have to go through a subscription to enjoy games like these in 2024.

Nintendo could easily give the option to either subscribe or pay to keep games individually; doing the pro-consumer thing. Heck, I would even subscribe to the service if they didn’t lock things behind paywalls. But when they have no goodwill for us consumers, I won’t give them any of mine.

    1. I get what you said. But the reality is that most normal people (people that’s not terminally online) didn’t really care about the difference between subscription all-you-can-eat services (Netflix, Spotify, Game Pass, Switch Online) and buying ala carte for full ownership. Not enough people make a fuss for Big Tech to care enough to cater to people like you.

    2. Also you only truly “owned” something if it’s in physical form. Remember the recent Sony and Discovery fiasco? Digital “ownership” is not guaranteed whatsoever.

      1. Yeah, that’s why I used quotation marks on “products I buy”, but at least it’s better to have something for multiple years for a one time fee rather than have to pay for it over and over again; and then loose it either way.

And yeah, I rarely post like this because I know my opinion has lost its popular opinion a looong time ago. But the biggest difference between subscription services in general, like Game Pass, and Switch Online is mostly boiled down to pay walls. Xbox can backup saves even without any Xbox-subscription, and they don’t lock games behind it (okay, online play, which is also an anti-consumer thing, but maintenance of servers does cost so).

Like, Xbox throws in so much to Game Pass Ultimate that you want to buy it because of its perks. Nintendo, IMO, tries to get you to buy it because it’s the only way to access certain things like F-Zero 99, and safety for you save files – which not ever game supports, like Animal Crossing and Splatoon.
