Nintendo apparently not allowing retailers sell physical version pre-orders of games online

For most of spring, a lot of users have been reporting that online pre-orders for upcoming Nintendo Switch first-party releases, such as the remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, have been getting cancelled. It has been happening with retailers including Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart.

Well, we finally have a reason why. Walmart has sent an email to a Twitter user that notifies them of why their pre-order got cancelled. According to Walmart, “Nintendo will only be offering this item in stores”. This is suggesting that the reason why the pre-orders are being cancelled is simply because Nintendo isn’t allowing people to pre-order these games physically online. A tweet relaying the news is down below.

Probably due to piracy and the fact they don’t trust Wally World as they do sell their games before street date.

Not really the problem usually with online orders. You can still preorder in store then come and pick it up which is where most street date breaking happens. Rarely does the warehouse put it on the truck to consumers houses before they are supposed to

      1. I’ll dat myself on the first title, but WOW Burning Crusade, Pikmin 2, Metroid Prime, and Tears of the Kingdom….all arrived to me a day early.

  2. My guess is this is trying to combat scalping of new games considering that you can still buy them in store

    1. Wow, Nintendo being a terrible, inconsiderate company when they conveniently face no repercussions for doing so? How surprising! I’ve never seen anything like this happen before!!

      1. This is most likely a store thing not Nintendo. Nintendo doesn’t care how a store sells their product nor does it have a say really. That is all decided by the stores.

  3. I really hope all these game companies don’t call themselves going only digital later I will most def protest.

  4. You should know that this practice is not legal but the big brands don’t care and do it anyway… And we’ve had another effect for a few years: the release of game videos made by youtubers before the official release. So yes, I understand why Nintendo bans this now

@London I fear, alas, that we are heading towards this, digital has a triple advantage for these companies.-Fight against the second-hand market-Limit piracy-Recover store margins on the sale of games. There is nevertheless a good perception for us, the players: the drop in the price of games because it is the mass distribution that imposes the same price for the physical and digital versions in order not to suffer from “unfair competition”

  5. Sounds like the ’90 and early ’00 Nintendo. You know, the Nintendo that got in trouble with the EU Union because they did anti-consumer and illegal stuff.

    1. Artificial supply and demand the oldest trick in Nintendos playbook, while they are good games I can’t help but think these full priced remakes are going to be shelf warmers so Nintendo isn’t really achieving anything here.

  6. I think it is because people are trying to buy multiple copies and then resell them at a big price.
