There was a period when we were getting lots of information about the unannounced Final Fantasy IX Remake but in recent months information has dried up completely. It seems that the reason for this is that development has completely stalled on the classic JRPG remake which was apparently being developed as a single game, rather than like Final Fantasy VII Remake which was split into three meaty parts. The new information comes from Alex Donaldson from RPGSite and according to him the project was very far along internally and then development ceased for whatever reason. The project could be revisited by Square Enix in the future, but at the moment development has been paused.

Not the game I thought Square would get confused over, but I’m maybe not surprised. Perhaps the remake was looking a hell of a lot like the original game and so they shut it down. I know most people would be in for a very straightforward remake of FF9. Or maybe they took out the turn based mechanics and finally realized that was a stupid direction to go in. Either way management probably tripped up just making the simple choice.
I literally just got this for the original PlayStation yesterday. I honestly don’t think this needs a remake at all. I could understand 7 being remade since the original is a bit hard to go back to. But 9 has aged almost perfectly. I am glad this has stalled, just rerelease 13, 15, and 16 on switch 2 so that every mainline final fantasy game is playable on the switch.
Honestly I agree, I’m pretty suprised they would have gone with IX considering how it aged, when VIII makes much more sense to do after VII, especially with it being pretty rough to go back to still lol. X | X-2 aged great too.
I need XIII trilogy and XV and XVI on Switch 2 so baaaaadduuhh
Are u saying you’re glad it’s stalled because a lot of people online have expressed interest in a remake, but u feel that your appreciation for FF9 is more honorable? I bought FF9 at launch for PlayStation and have appreciated that version for decades. I’d like to see a remake because the original will exist for the rest of my life, and a new version only adds an option to playing FF9. Options are good, right?
It doesn’t need a remake. Leave the thing alone.
They should do a sequel or make Final Fantasy 18 based off the game

Yoshi-P said in Berlin last week that the game was never in development in the first place.
I’m glad someone finally says it. People been constantly pushing for this game and I want it too. But Yoshi P has already said that this game wasn’t even in development. So I’m kind of confused as to why news of it keeps coming up. It’s possible something could have changed, but I would expect square enix to make an announcement if they started development on it. I feel like this is rumors that are being taken as fact, because that happens a lot too.
As if by chance…I’ve lost count of the times these so-called ‘leakers’ have talked about this ‘supposed’ remake, but we’ve never seen a trace of it! Then when everything seems to fade into oblivion, ‘oh well actually, the development is pretty much canceled’…
When I think that some people are going to swallow this story without thinking…

How come ya’ll skipped FF VIII THO!! I loved that game. IX was good but why frickin skip VIII! That’s not really fair tho. That game had a great storyline and all! I’ve played that one the most outta all FFs! I would love to play the remake and Platinum it too!
When I played (but never finished) that game as a kid it was love-hate. I wonder how I’d feel about it today
