Japan: Top ten best-selling physical games of 2023 were all on Nintendo Switch

Japanese sales tracker Famitsu has revealed the best-selling boxed video game in The Land of the Rising Sun during 2023. The critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom leads the way and you can see from the top ten down below that the best-selling games were all on the Nintendo Switch family of systems. Famitsu reports that $3 billion was spent on boxed games and hardware in Japan last year. The best-selling Nintendo Switch model was the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model)

Best-selling games of 2023 in Japan:

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch, Nintendo) – 1,929,603
  2. Super Mario Bros Wonder (Switch, Nintendo) – 1,549,401
  3. Pikmin 4 (Switch, Nintendo) – 1,119,027
  4. Pokémon Scarlet & Violet (Switch, The Pokémon Company) – 907,432
  5. Momotaro Dentetsu World: The Earth Spins with Hope (Switch, Konami) – 795,681
  6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch, Nintendo) – 617,223
  7. Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe (Switch, Nintendo) – 514,581
  8. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince (Switch, Square Enix) – 510,477
  9. Splatoon 3 (Switch, Nintendo) – 503,312

  1. Nintendomination. Only 2 3rd party games out of the 10. Most 3rd party games flop on Nintendo hardware. It’s nothing new, it’s always been like this.
