Reuters source says Switch 2 expected this year uses Nvidia custom design chip

A new report by news site Reuters discussing Nvidia says that the successor to the Nintendo Switch is expected to arrive later this year and will feature a Nvidia custom design. The information comes from one of the news site’s undisclosed sources. Nintendo has yet to announce the successor to the popular Nintendo Switch family of systems. A leaker suggested that the new system will be unveiled by Nintendo in March.

Nintendo’s current Switch handheld console already includes Nvidia’s Tegra X1 chip. A new version of the Switch console expected this year is likely to include a Nvidia custom design, one source said.

Nintendo declined to comment.

  1. The bigger question is, can that custom chip run games designed to run on the Tegra X1 chip? In other words, will the Switch 2 be backwards-compatible?

    1. While this doesn’t answer the question, but the Tegra X1 was an Nvidia chip too. Doesn’t mean the next device will be backwards compatible. But the fact that both are custom chips (assuming this rumor turns out to be accurate) and are both developed by Nvidia is a good sign.

      1. Well it doesn’t have to be backwards compatibility honestly. Nintendo just makes another retro app on their next system and it will probably have GCN or DS online subscription this time on the new system. This is a good sign for it.

        1. I think they meant backwards compatible with the Switch. GCN or DS NSO would be cool, but it would still kinda suck if my Switch games weren’t compatible with the Switch 2

  2. Every year they’ve been shouting the same thing: “will happen this year” or “will happen this >insert month here<” and every time it never happens. Been that way since the launch of Switch. And whenever they are wrong they make something up like “it’s delayed cuz of the pandemic” or “they are optimizing the console” or sum bullplop. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not making fun of them, I just find it funny how they cry wolf or in this case, cry Switch Pro/2.🤣🤣🤣

  3. Well doesn’t Nintendo have like a 20 year contract with Nvidia?
So not surprised a new Switch would feature a Tegra chip or a custom chip from Nvidia

  4. And if nothing happens, they will accuse Nintendo of having “changed their plan” at the last minute… I really hate these leakers whose source is probably as reliable as their brother…. The Switch 2 doesn’t exist, never existed and will never exist, that’s something you have to understand: it would be contrary to their policy
