Those of you hoping to see the Final Fantasy VII trilogy on the next Nintendo system will have to prepare for disappointment as it has been confirmed today that the trilogy is a PlayStation exclusive. The news comes from an interview by The Washington Post with a high ranking employee at Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is not clear how much money was at stake to secure the game as a PlayStation exclusive.
“Securing the “Final Fantasy VII” trilogy as a console exclusive is a feather in the PlayStation cap. It’s part of recognizing the original game’s importance as a defining game for the PlayStation experience, said Christian Svensson, vice president of second- and third-party content ventures and strategic initiatives at Sony Interactive Entertainment.”
“Back in that same console generation for the original PlayStation, Sony Computer Entertainment had few franchises of its own, and in order to find its place in a very competitive video game industry, we sought to win the hearts and minds of key third-party developers like Square,” Svensson said. That focus on third-party partnerships — releasing games made by outside studios — is “ingrained in our DNA to this day,” he said, “and connects directly to how we’ve worked together on ‘Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.’”

I’m on chapter 9 of Final Fantasy Rebirth and the game is a masterpiece, Rebirth has great potential and could very well be GOTY.

I’m fine with it. Remake was awesome and Rebirth improves in every way. The story is so much better than the original, both in depth and width (more content and context). Stoked to see part 3 in like 4 years lol

This is the kind of thing I show to everyone but they don’t listen. Sony Cries to courts and Lawyers about other Companies When every single IP and Franchise Sony can get their little grubby hands on they try to make Exclusive to PlayStation. Even IP’s that aren’t their own. Not Long ago they didn’t even want Games to have Cross Play. Sony is super scummy and disgusting.
With Sony talking about ditching the PS5 for the PS6 soon, and with the time between Remake and Rebirth, I wonder if FF VII Returns (not sure what the title could be haha) is going to end up as a cross-platform release or an exclusive. Then I guess each FF VII Remake title in the Trilogy would be on a different Playstation haha

Sony cried when Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard about “it’ll create a monopoly”. Yet here they are keeping Final Fantasy 7 Remake from other platforms. Sony gets the majority of JRPGs and anime-inspired titles (Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, etc) as exclusives and has the balls to call Microsoft out on buying more studios to make exclusives, which they don’t have a lot of.
I get why Sony did it, but like it’s not fair to the rest of us. A lot of us don’t wanna buy a new console for a specific game, because it’d be a stupid purchase. Xbox is a great buy because of Game Pass, thousands of games for free and even exclusive perks worth something. I got a 30 day sub to Paramount plus and I used it to binge watch Beavis and Butthead. I got 3 months of Discord Nitro which was neat.
PlayStation Plus doesn’t offer too much other than free games each month access to classic games on a higher tier and some exclusive store discounts.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass is nice, giving you access to the N64 and Genesis library, free dlc as long as you keep the service, and…I think that’s about it.
Steam…well you can play online without a subscription no matter who you buy your games from so that’s always a plus. Steam has some nice discounts and games that you have ever tried before but should. The only downside is that a lot of games (especially today’s games) require you to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on graphics cards, SSDs, etc. Even then, you’d have to upgrade again in the future to keep up. It’s not for those who want a quick in and quick out gaming experience, but I get the charm of PC gaming.
All in all, Sony ain’t shit for this, but I get it. Final Fantasy 7 did come out on PlayStation first so in order to keep that history alive, they made the remake trilogy exclusive. Sucks for the rest of us, but understandable. I’ve been playing the HD Remaster Final Fantasy 7 and 8 and I’ve been playing Crisis Core so it’s all good.

I personally don’t care for FFVII, never cared for story or characters from the start but that’s rather ignorant to keep it from those who want to enjoy it. You shouldn’t have to buy another console because of a game and I’m sorry FFVII sure as hell isn’t one of those games that would warrant that.
