Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama has passed away

The Dragon Ball franchise has been going strong for 40 years. It all started with one man, Akira Toriyama, with a manga that would be a part of Weekly Shōnen Jump for 11 years. Toriyama has also contributed to video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon.

However, some sad news has been shared tonight. It was announced by the official Dragon Ball Twitter account that Akira Toriyama passed away at the age of 68 on March 1st due to acute subdural hematoma. You can see the tweet down below. We hope Akira Toriyama rests and peace, and we send our condolences to his friends and family.

  1. It’s so hard to believe. I have way too much free time, constantly going back to the same site.

    And then I find this.

So what’s the future of DBZ now…..

    1. I thought he had more time. It always happens when you least expect it. As for the answer to your question, my guess is it’s either going to be real good or real bad.

    2. A true legend. His stories were always around me in my life and always in my heart. Bless and thank you for all the joy you gave us, Mr Toriyama.

  2. This is so heartbreaking to hear. The legend gave us (or contributed to) some of the most influential franchises in manga / anime and video games of all time. Love DBZ to no end and Chrono Trigger is all time GOAT. He will be severely missed.

  3. There are many sad news throughout the years that personally hits you very hard in the stomatch and this is without a doubt one of the biggest.
Rest in peace Toriyama-sensei, thank you for your timeless and iconic works to the world of comics.

  4. After logging here on this site to search up more news about Nintendo games and now I find this. This guy is a true legend to all of us. I can’t believe the men who makes all of this happened is truly gone already. This is so sad. He is the reason why he got me into Dragon Ball series and animes. R.I.P. Akira. You are a proud legend now. :-(

      1. Impossibly sad… his art has inspired and breathed life into countless people around the world, and will be remembered for all time, and inspire countless more people… may you rest easy, Akira Toriyama. Rest in Peace. 🕊💝

  5. When I saw the title my reaction was “WHAT!?” I even thought for a split second this was some sort of sick joke but…my gosh this is so sad, I grew up with DBZ and it’s creator is gone.
Rest in Peace Akira Toriyama, you gave us so much and you will always be remembered for your amazing contributions to the anime industry.

  6. RIP Toriyama-san, you rocked my childhood as well as that of my husband, thank you for everything you have given us

  7. Thank you Akira Toriyama, you were the reason I started to workout (Kung Fu and weight training) when I was 14. Which lead to me becoming a personal trainer, gym owner and now owning a personal training agency. You truly defined my life with your work. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Let’s just hope they don’t fu** up the franchise now and instead produce many more (anime!) seasons!

  8. RIP, Toriyama. Thanks for one of the best anime (Dragon Ball & it’s sequels) & video games (Chrono Trigger) of my life. Both the manga/anime & video game industries wouldn’t be what they are today without you.

My cousin showed me a Facebook post about his passing; she’s a huge fan of Dragon Ball, which I’m to “blame” for. (A bigger fan than me.) Been catching up on my Masako since around 2am because of it. He’ll probably do an unscheduled video about this before the day ends, which is why I’m trying to catch up.

  9. I started reading my first Dragon Ball manga on mobile at the end of September, I liked it immediately, I watched several episodes of the first anime series already that day. At the next MondoCon, where I was by the way for the first time, I bought three manga from it at the same time and read them in about a week. Akira Toriyama, thank you for the inspiration, thank you for everything.😀😢😢

    Rip, Akira Toriyama:(
