Niantic says Pokemon GO is “not only healthy, but it’s growing”

Believe it or not, Pokemon GO is still alive. In fact, this year will mark 8 years since the game originally launched, and Niantic is already beginning to look towards the game’s 10th anniversary in 2026. Senior vice president of Pokémon Go Ed Wu even discussed the matter in a brand new interview with Eurogamer.

Wu said that “it’s bananas to think this thing is going to be going into its next decade soon. It’s not only healthy, but it’s growing. And we’re putting a lot of investment into ensuring it’s a great game and has really firm foundations for the next 10 years. As we gear up for that 10th anniversary, we want a refresh that’s befitting that next decade. We’re refreshing our avatar system next with a more improved experience, updated assets – a modern system that can offer more customization”.

I’m skeptical to believe this game is healthy comparative to 2016 figures, but I still see people play semi-often. To be honest, while I don’t have any personal grudges with it, I think there’s a lot of wasted potential in seasonal story-based campaigns they could’ve been running to keep people more engaged. I also don’t know why they’re making the female avatars uglier lately.

    1. Whilst it’s hard to imagine that the player numbers are as high as they were when the game initially launched, I think they’ve probably more successfully monetised the game in the time since.

  2. I’m not sure I’d say the avatar system is improved. The new models might have more customization options, but are a visual downgrade from the previous ones.

  3. I went to a meet up for the Primal Groudon raid day at my local park in London a couple weeks back and there were easily 80-100 people there. For a mobile game and an event that wasn’t even officially sanctioned, but rather, was just set up by passionate members of the community, I’d say that’s a pretty lively game considering it’s 8 years in at this point.

  4. What a bunch of horseshit. Families can’t afford to play with their kids. Wild and raid IVs down. Remote raiding…. grossly and unconsionably expensive. Always the classic BS response from customer service…”IV is random” (starting to doubt this) but this never addresses the fact that they have ridiculously decreased rates of decent IVs. Niantic’s inflationary rate has far surpassed the inflationary rate of any other consumer product by at least 6 fold. What an embarrasing social conscious Niantic has. I refuse to buy into their BS anymore.

  5. Makes sense. This weekend I saw so many people out to catch shadow mewtwos in local raids. Managed to catch 15 to 20 of them.

  6. I kind of gave up on it last year when Niantic laid off a lot of their staff. Kind of weird to do that if the player base is still growing IMO, but… also the integration with the mainline games isn’t really that great.
