An unofficial reproduction of the NES Nintendo World Championships cartridge has been successfully backed via Kickstarter, raising a total of £16,593 at the time of writing with an initial goal of £8,452. This new ‘pro’ version celebrates the upcoming 35th anniversary of the 1990 World Championships event, featuring both the original version of the cartridge and a new, more challenging pro version. The pro version ramps up the difficulty significantly. Players will start in World 8-1 of Super Mario Bros instead of World 1-1. Rad Racer begins at level 3, and Tetris starts at level 8. Additionally, the time limits can be set from 5 to 15 minutes, allowing for a customizable experience.
However, this nostalgia comes at a high price. The purple cartridge of the game is priced at €140 (£119), while a limited edition gold cartridge, already sold out, signed by competitive gamers Robin Mihara and Thor Aackerlund, costs a hefty €350 (£296). While the Kickstarter campaign has found success, there’s a looming question about its legality. Given Nintendo’s history of protecting its intellectual property, there’s concern that the company might intervene, especially since it plans to release its own Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition on the Switch. One commenter asked about potential legal issues, but Mihara reassured backers by noting, “There have been dozens of Nwc repros made and have not been shut down.”

For this reason,we would like to create the NWC 35th Edition: a new developed NES pro version. The original game contains three games which were specially modified for the competition. In the new developed pro version it will be harder to grab fifty coins in the first game. The track in the second game will be longer and harder. The last game starts at level 8. Time settings from 5 till almost 15 minutes for the games.”

This will be shut down by Nintendo. Even if it isn’t this will not be worth anything in the future as they are just ripping off what is already releasing. I supposed anyone would even buy into this money grabbing scheme.

Okay, but not while Nintendo is actively planning on selling that product. You’re actively pickpocketing at this point. I’m all for emulation and custom repros when the official product isn’t available, shit like this is how you ruin it for everyone. The only emulators they’re going after are for current hardware, same thing with mods and cracks. Just keep it a gen or two behind and we can all keep on keeping on.
