Nintendo president admits game development now taking longer as hardware advances

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has explained to investors that games are now taking more time and more resources to develop and that is impacting development times. However, he says to remedy this, the Kyoto-based company is “continually expanding our development resources and making the necessary investments.” Tetsuya Takahashi chimed in and told them that “as hardware advances, it is inevitable that software development takes longer” and that they “aim to continue with a variety of new offerings”

Furukawa: Game development today is more prolonged, more complex, and more advanced. That is unavoidable. To deal with this, we are continually expanding our development resources and making the necessary investments.

Takahashi: As hardware advances, it is inevitable that software development takes longer. But I believe we are succeeding in our efforts to shorten development cycles, for example by steadily improving the development environment following the release of the hardware. Whether titles take a long time or a short time to develop, we want to make games that are fun.

It is not as if Super Mario Bros. Wonder was under continuous development for nearly a decade. There was a long gap between the release of the previous title, New Super Mario Bros. U, and the current title because various initiatives and studies were made in the meantime. Going forward, we aim to continue with a variety of new offerings, and we hope you look forward to them.

Takashi Tezuka (Executive Officer): After we finished Super Mario Bros. Wonder, I was reminded 11 years had gone by since the previous game. However, that doesn’t mean we did nothing during that time. We developed several new Mario games, such as the Super Mario Maker series and the 3D Mario series. To reiterate Nintendo’s creative philosophy, first we think about creating entertainment that has never been done before, regardless of whether it is a Mario series game or not. Then we think about how we can make it fun for everyone so they fall in love with Nintendo. All of our games involving Mario, not just Super Mario Bros. Wonder, are created with the goal of encouraging as many people as possible to enjoy them. As for upcoming new titles, some will take time to develop and others will be made in a short period of time. I hope you look forward to our new offerings.

  1. It’s alright with me, I don’t actually play a ton of games, when it comes to new games I usually buy only the top tier Nintendo games like the 3d Mario’s smash Zelda’s and some online shooters to play with my normie friends, retro games are usually better anyway and there are a ton of hidden gems so I got lots of cool games from the past that I can buy/emulate. But MAN I can’t wait for the switch 2 I know for a fact the launch games are going to be absolutely fire!

  2. I’m ok with this honestly. So, there is nothing to worry about. This is the time for them to not rush into things. I know the launch games are going be insane for Switch 2.

  3. What is wrong with the comments section on this site? A long comment I wrote didn’t register, I’ve no means of getting it back and I’m not typing it all out again.

    1. Thank goodness I’m not crazy. The same thing has happened to me a number of times. It sucks that it’s been happening especially since the longer comments are usually the more thought out ones

        1. It seems to be a common issue, I’ve had it happen numerous times. I think it’s because the comments get stuck in the spam filter and don’t register.

I think it’s happened to me before two on this site where I had a lengthy, and it didn’t post. After that whenever I make comments, I actually copy them completely and save them into my notes on my iPhone and if they don’t go up, I can always try them again without retyping them all over again. 😊

Sorry for my nonsensical wording, and typos. I did my post be voice, and I didn’t check it before I posted… so I’m definitely not Perfect !! Lol 😁

  6. If the Switch 2 is really PS4 power level , than it’s 11 year old tech and even if some things are modern , it’s not like Nintendo games are anywhere near what they can be on a descent console.

He has been saying this a couple of times now but I don’t really see it as a excuse , unless they make a ps5 power level console with modern technology. And even than they make so much money that they can easily expend and hire more people. That said they did open up a new building or expended on what they already had awhile back giving room for more personal , wich might have to do with the Switch 2 aswell since games get harder to make as he mentions. Still if you keep pumping out weak consoles I don’t see this is a valid story and if you do make a modern console than hire more people with all the money you have made.

    1. Nintendo specialty is portable/handheld console. They’re literally hard walled by the law of physics in how much power their console can achieve. Also by trying to sell the console at $400 with profit. Nintendo will never sold a console more powerful than Xbox/PS. And that’s fine. The two power stationary consoles are enough to saturate the market already (also don’t forget about gaming PC).

      1. Everything you say is old information , also never said they should make a better console than ps5/xbox but those are 4 years old (5 years when the switch 2 releases) so it’s cheaper now to put that Hardware out wich is a good release schedule for Nintendo. Sony and microsoft release something , Nintendo steps in halfway when prices have gone down , they get full third party support this way until next gen since games will still overlap even when the competition has a new console.

Also in case you missed it , the 8 bit , Snes , N64 , Gamecube , Wii where home consoles and a major reason why people buy Nintendo , Gameboy , Ds ect. where a nice addition for holiday’s or playing when the tv is not available.

      2. Small Edit : The Wii U was also a home console the screen just added extra gameplay. In fact Handheld hasnt been the specialty for nearly 40 years of Nintendo and the only reason why they are doing it now is cause they lost the handheld market to Mobile phones and tablets. Altough I still think a normal handheld next to a normal console would have sold really well cause all Nintendo handhelds did.

        1. Nintendo DS is literally the most sold console after the PS2. Saying Nintendo handheld is just a “nice addition” made me disregard anything you said. So you’re just a troll who hated Nintendo no matter what. Got it. Then just stop buying Nintendo hardware? I’m sure Nintendo will go bankrupt without your support /s

          1. I own every Nintendo console ever released with over 500 games , how many do you own? Also lets not try to compare handheld games to console games cause than mobile phones destroy the entire gaming industry. I consider Breath of the Wild a game not candy crush ;) Obviously handhelds have more normal games aswell but please don’t make up some stupid story that Zelda on the Gameboy or Gameboy Advance come anywhere near Ocarine of Time when it comes to scale and immersion. There great games for a handheld and thats it. Also sales mean shit , the Wii sold really well but it has nowhere near the library the Snes had. And before you start spitting out this is subjective just look up various lists , library’s and ratings. Not to mention how many are considered classics for a reason.

          2. Also Nintendo DS is not a console its a handheld , that said it was the best handheld they released with many great games. Another factor why it was so succesfull are flash cards so allot of people didnt buy any games just the handheld with full acces to every game they wanted.

    2. Weak console? A handheld at ps4 power is actually pretty awesome really. Then once docked it will probably be even stronger. As for the leaked specs you do not realize it is newer hardware so it will actually run better than a PS4 and as far as that goes most games still are made for PS4 and XOne. PC is just too expensive anymore, I know I am selling mine because co sole is just the cheaper and better way to go really. Upgrade costs all the time and messing with settings for all games is getting old to me. I just want to put the game in and play.

Also as a Nintendo player people play games for fun not for the super duper newest graphics. PlayStation always touts that crap and the games end up sucking.

      1. I dont play pc and dont care one bit for the handheld part. Been playing since the 8 bit when it comes to home consoles and gameboy for additional handheld.

Problem these days compared to then is that you buy Nintendo for a couple of Nintendo games and need another console for the rest of the library , wich isnt what Nintendo used to be.

Also steam deck is a handheld aswell and runs everything so according your reasoning no it isnt as awesome as you make it out to be. We don’t know how good the Switch 2 will be so I will give you that , it might be just as good as a steam deck. But obviously there are some specs and reactions from dev kits going around.

Even so I buy it to play on a tv like I did for 40 years so don’t care and in many peoples case the handheld part is just wasted resources that could have gone into making a proper console that actually does run other triple A titles not just Nintendo’s.

Since the Wii you buy a Nintendo to play main line Mario lets call it 3d , Zelda , Metroid and I gues Pokemon and thats about it. Leaving you with 5 games so you start buying “mid” games just so you have some actual games.

You do know that franchises like Final Fantasy , Street Fighter , Mortal Kombat (sure we have bad ports of this one right now) , Metal Gear solid and 40+ more used to be a thing in the 80s , 90s and 2000s right?

To put it simple : Would it really hurt to make a console that has all the amazing Nintendo games + multiplatform games so we don’t have to buy 2 consoles or a pc? In the end its about games and a amazing library of them no matter who made them? In fact why help the competition by forcing people buy 2 consoles when you could have all those games and people on your own console aswell?

No its not all about power obviously but about good gameplay , but allot of people want acces to all the amazing multiplatform games + Nintendo games witouth beeing forced to buy a Playstation , Xbox , Pc.

Also lets not pretend like this isn’t a thing cause the entire internet is filled with video’s , topics , comments of people who say the exact same things.

        1. For some reason your not allowed to say that you want a normal console that runs multiplatform games on the internet. People always get really defensive about it when it comes to Nintendo. But I totally agree with you and mis the old days.

        2. The thing is, Nintendo is not able to spend the money with a super powerful console and take risks like they did with the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube anymore, as they did not sell as much as the other consoles because they are mainly a company about games, whislt the others are big tech conglomerates. With the Wii, they understood that what makes a console great is not the power, but the games and the new way of playing them. Unfortunately, many third parties didn’t want to port their games to the Wii, Wii U and the Switch, however, many are returning on the Switch.
