DFC Intelligence: “Sony or Microsoft will struggle mightily in a distant third place” next generation

Market research firm DFC Intelligence has released a report on the future of the gaming industry which makes it clear that their current stance on the matter is that Nintendo will come out the dominant leader in the next generation of consoles with either Sony or Microsoft languishing in second and third place. Nintendo is heavily expected to release the Switch 2 this year, which will give it a strong head start over the PlayStation 6 and next Xbox console which are both expected to release in the next few years.

“There isn’t room for more than two major console systems. Sony or Microsoft will struggle mightily in a distant third place – largely depending on which of those companies can gain early momentum.”

  1. If I might have a word on this: in my opinion, Sony and its fans are the incarnation of evil. You have no idea of all the crap I’ve seen in the last years on gaming sites, every time you expressed appreciation over a game that isn’t a Sony first party game you got slaughtered, and as someone who is deeply attached to Nintendo’s ones and has no connection whatsoever with post PS2- Sony games I was one of the worst victims of this. Even on Nintendo focused sites like Nintendolife and Nintendoeverything users have become like that (why do you think I left them?). And if you think that nowadays:

    1)Sony’s games, except Astro Bot, always have the same structure (Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok and Spider Man 2 all had the same skeleton, and so will Ghost of Yotei, Wolverine and Intergalactic);
2)They became so expensive that they take AGES to be completely developed and released, to the point that Sony has no longer the output it used to have and can release one or two per year,
You can see how messed up gaming and gamers have become in the last year. A world in which only Sony’s first party games have the right to exist? I’d rather quit gaming instead.

I cannot believe how many gaming sites, even Nintendo ones, are siding Sony more nowadays…

    1. I am going to get crucified for writing this but the main responsible for gaming decline is Hideo Kojima, yes, he is. remember when he said that games should have the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster, so, based on that reasoning where it would leave small indie developers, how can some people pay for games if the budget keeps increasing?

    2. You’ve only been commenting on this site for the past 2 weeks or so, but I just get the sense you’re a bit of s** stirrer ?
Side note: Lets also not forget the Smashfans, Its well documented to have a highly toxic fan base.

      1. I’m not usually like this, it’s just after everything I’ve been throught I hold quite a lot of grunge torward other gaming sites and the people there. And whenever a news that makes me thinking of those places and how people there talked appears here like this one, I can’t help but get quite frustrated…

        1. Hey ABC, I think I know who you are used to be on Nintendoeverything. You’re M***** right? Your posting style is eerily similar to that guy. The most negative Nintendo “fan” rivaling the trolls like link2metroid and logical_q. You need to have more confidence in Nintendo and not caring about Sony that much.

      2. I get that vibe from everyone on this site tbh lol (not the owners).
You ever seen that post on twitter where its like “you can say i like waffles and someone will say you hate pancakes”

thats the type of engagement i see here often.

  2. Sony and Microsoft have been making a mistake for several years: that of bringing their consoles closer and closer to the PC world, but they are so short of money that they are forced to develop on pc (Sony) or pc and competition (Microsoft) in this case; What is the point of buying their consoles if their games are also available elsewhere? In addition, their consoles will never hold the comparison with the PCs even if they are much cheaper…

For me they have moved away from the main attraction of video games, i.e. fun; it’s only about graphics or computing power; but who cares about that….

    1. Well it’s not like Graphics/loading time don’t matter at all, but its fait to say that the most important part of a game is that it should be fun ( funny how PS players are the “serious gamers” and still Astrobot is one of the biggest hit this year on that console) the issue is that Xbox and PS are going for “realistic graphics” what makes the consoles expensive and game developers try to make games that look and feel like reality, but the price of that process is 70€ games and 5-10 year development time… I rather wait for a fun Mario game for a max. 5 years development, than a super realistic Game thats for 10 years in development with x+2 issues when it comes out…

      1. The graphics have never made a game otherwise no indie game would end in success…
The power at present means nothing and the proof is obvious; No game draws full power from PCs/consoles; Games are still being released on PS4 and Xbox One even though they are more than 10 years old!

The story of the exploding budget, it was Sony and Microsoft who caused it and now they are paying the price (it’s the case to say it)

    1. I’d rather see Sony to sunk instead, after everything they caused to the entire gaming industry and community in the last years…

        1. To be fair, Xbox has quite a variety of stuff for the years to come, while Sony has just three games (I mean in terms of first party exclusives) for the next three years all with the same skeleton. The sole reason people care more for Sony than Microsoft, it’s because the former has brainwashed the entire community…

          1. Microsoft ports everything to pc, the xbox literally has 0 exclusives while playstation has 2/3 exclusives which is still not much but it’s enough for some to stick around with playstation, also as a brand, playstation is way more loved

            1. …. you realize that now all of Sony’s exclusives come to PC as well right? The only difference is that they take longer to come and not day one like Microsoft’s ones. But as of now, pretty much all of Sony’s major exclusives from PS4 and PS5 are on PC (except Astro Bot aaaaaand……. Bloodborne, which for whatever reason Sony is stubborn to not port/remaster). So it’s not like if Sony is giving Many more reason to but one of their console over a PC compared to Microsoft…

        2. That’s false. Xbox has been in PC for quite some time now which is why the consoles have not sold as much. Sony is being forced to go that route now as well. It is what they get for trying to compete with graphics instead of originality and fun. Nintendo will be in the other corner laughing at them both. Sony will take a nosedive next gen. Xbox will survive and thrive as they are already integrated into the PC world.

  3. This is the dumbest thing I’ve read so far this year. If anyone believes Sony will be in a position of strength in five years, Ignorance is bliss, I guess. They can barely buy 10% of Kadokawa, for God’s sake. Sony is also trying to sell the Spider-Man IP back to Marvel, lol. Wake up ponys.

    1. This is the dumbest thing I’ve read so far this year. If anyone believes Poseidon34 will be in a position of strength in five years, Ignorance is bliss, I guess. She can barely buy 10% of her hookers, for god’s sake. Poseidon34 is also trying to sell her insurance back to her family, lol. Wake up ponys.

  4. I’ve been saying for over a decade now: Microsoft is only in this industry as a vanity project. They clearly aren’t profiting off of XBOX, which is losing more ground every generation, and they’re so ridiculously wealthy from other endeavors that there’s no real losses to be had from dinking around in gaming. What they need to do is abandon console gaming and embrace PC. They already have the infrastructure, they already prioritize technical feats above creative ones, and they’ve purchased a small army of various western game studios. Either make a Steam competitor, or just go 3rd-party and release gaming PC’s/Laptops.

    1. I don’t think they can go that much further anymore, the last successful Xbox product was the 360 and for a good reason, it was their last good product, the new ad campaign “this is an Xbox” just tells you everything you need to know about their future, they are going multiplat.

      1. Xbox not Microsoft but Xbox is worth more than 600 billion. Sony is not worth more than 128. Nintendo is worth 75 billion.
Xbox is going nowhere and neither is Nintendo. Sony was only 50 billion in 2020 before the PS 5 came out and have been losing value fast in the last 2 years going up to 155 billion and now back down to 125. By the next console Nintendo will be worth more than them again. Sony cannot keep their value because they have nothing to offer.

    1. Both have been on the market for 4 years. You’re not really that dense to believe they wouldn’t already be planning for their next consoles are you.

  5. Microsoft’s future on console is doomed. They themselves know that and that’s why they decided to focus on Gamepass things. The sole reason as to why the X360 was successful was due to Sony’s very stupid decisions regarding the PS3 (complicated architecture which made developing/porting games a hassle – and they themselves stated “we aren’t making a console that everyone can develop for it”, lack of exclusives for a good chunk, copying gimmicks without the soul behind them, price, etc). So the hardcore userbase moved towards it.

Nowadays, however, give me one single reason to even bother with a Xbox. Exclusives? Doesn’t have them (some of them are even coming to other consoles). Gamepass? No, thanks, I like owning my games. Support? You only need if you break your console, which someone who takes care of their stuff won’t ever do.

  6. microsoft can kick rocks. All i want is all the rare nintendo games ported onto one console and maybe grabbed by the ghoulies as a special port.

sony. they can come back from this L but ill be on PC and Nintendo only now. Sony lost that square enix exclusivity.

  7. It’s clear that the gaming industry is evolving rapidly, and as new consoles emerge, it’s crucial to understand the broader landscape. While Nintendo may hold a strong lead, players should consider the implications of Sony and Microsoft’s strategies, such as their shift toward more PC-like consoles. If you’re interested in digging deeper into public records, including arrest data and criminal history, you can explore useful tools like Arrest Records and other legal resources. This helps you stay informed in various fields beyond gaming!

  8. I’ve owned both Xbox and Sony consoles when it made sense long ago when exclusives were a thing and competition was giving us great games. Nowadays both Microsoft and Sony can take an L I’ll just have my Nintendo console and buy or make a gaming Pc. I mean when half of the world is making way too many games that no one wants and neither Sony or Microsoft have any exclusives that get me hyped then ditching them for PC just makes sense for someone like me lol. Not to mention the direction of eventually taking away physical games from us just pushes people like me to say f both y’all I’ll join the PC peeps for bloated AAA titles I actually want to play haha.

  9. I’m starting to now wonder if maybe I should have stuck it out with being Nintendo only a little longer in spite of the Wii U being a dud. If I knew Sony IE was gonna one day kill itself by becoming censor crazy (mostly due to becoming too political) & moving their console exclusives to PC, I might have just gone without a Ninty home system for 2016, stuck solely with my 3DS, & picked up the Switch in 2017.
