Imran Khan: Punch-Out series effectively dead at least at Next Level Games

Kinda Funny Games presenter Imran Khan has said on gaming forum Reset Era that the Punch-Out series is effectively a dead franchise at Nintendo. Khan said that he spoke to someone a while back who was involved in the last Punch-Out game from Next Level Games and asked them about a new game. The person he spoke to said that the character backlash which ensued after the Wii version was released combined with the overall sales of the series have simply buried the games. However, he does say that another studio could always work on the Punch-Out franchise in the future.

“I got someone from, let’s say a studio close to Punch-Out, drunk at a bar once and asked about a new one.
The story I was told, and bear in mind this could just be the perspective of one person and no one else, was that there was significantly more backlash against the characters of the Wii game than they expected. And this team spent a lot of time assuring Nintendo that they weren’t leaning into bad stereotypes that would get called out this time, so everyone just kind of furrowed their brow and called it done. Especially since other games from that team had much, much higher sales potential.”

“I guess it’s less “We can’t do it without stereotypes so let’s not bother!” and more a World Warriors problem where they can’t fully cut from the past without people rioting. That and other games from the studio sell like 14 million copies more, so why bother.”

    1. Not saying it’s a good thing, but this is a very common occurrence in the world of journalism. The “whatever it takes” mindset leads to these sort of tactics to gather information.

  1. As everyone who isn’t brain-dead is well aware already. It’s been dead for years, the biggest representation being Little Mac (worst character btw) in Smash Bros, and his stage. Not a great series in the first place, will not be missed. Time to stop dreaming of a revival. Wake up ponies.

    1. Im willing to bet you have no idea what “virtue signaling” means because you’re statement doesn’t make much sense

    1. Whoa, what? Wii Sports Boxing and ARMS are both great fun, but neither can replace the specific gameplay that Punch-Out!! offers. Mario Kart is a great series too, but it doesn’t outright replace traditional racing games; each of these different titles offer unique gameplay experiences that differentiate them from one another- even small differences in gameplay can go a long way in making each game feel unique and different from the others.

  2. What “backlash” are they referring to here? From everything I’ve seen online Punch Out Wii seems to be very highly regarded by those who’ve played it, and I’ve seen a decent number of people asking for a sequel.

And I don’t know why people would have an issue with the “stereotypes” in the game when it made fun of every nationality equally, including Canada where Next Level Games is based. It’s not like it picked on one group of people in particular.
Personally I’d be honoured if, in a potential sequel, the first and weakest opponent you faced was a posh tea drinking brit who has crumpets circling his head after you stun him. It’s all in good fun.

    1. I was once recommended a 3 hour video essay about how Hades (the game) is racist towards Greek people… and the video was done by a Canadian.

      Nothing is safe.

  3. If they ever do a live action adaptation of this Colton Haynes 100% has to play Little Mac. Dude looks like a real life version of him.

  4. Well there goes any hope for a live-action film, starring Leslie David Baker as Doc Brown.

At least a fan mod of the Wii game, featuring all the cut characters left over from the first arcade game and Super Punch-Out (plus Mr. Dream himself) could be a thing.

  5. When it comes to indulging in desserts, Crumbl Cookies has taken the spotlight
with its unique approach to cookies and other treats. Known for its rotating menu and creative flavors, Crumbl has captured the hearts (and taste buds) of cookie enthusiasts everywhere. Let’s dive into what makes Crumbl special and explore other delightful options in the dessert world.
