New Nintendo patent shows Switch 2 could use DLSS style AI upscaling and reduce file size

Nintendo was granted a new patent on 31st December showcasing how they could implement a DLSS-style upscaling technique on their next platform widely called the Switch 2. This would enable the Kyoto-based company and third party developers to allow their games to upscale at higher resolutions on the next system. Sony recently unleashed PSSR for the PlayStation 5 Pro console, which is their own internal DLSS-inspired software, which has been a tad hit and miss for some games on the platform. Another thing mentioned in Nintendo’s patent is the ability to to reduce video game file sizes to allow them to fit on cartridges, though this would still mean that additional downloads would most likely be a thing.

  1. I would expect them to have some form of DLSS there if they use a new nVidia chip. They could opt for FSR(not ideal) or Xess if it’s available for the developers(better than FSR), but DLSS would be preferred.

  2. The FSR would also be wiser but… AMD technology… if Nintendo uses an RTX 3000 then it will mean dlss 2.0 so the one where you have to recode all the games… very unlikely…
I don’t know of any Nvidia SoC using an RTX 4000 so either it will be brand new or a modified RTX 3000 (which I don’t believe so much..)
Finally, a patent does not mean at all that it will be used…

    Wait and see

    1. FSR would be a huge mistake. It’s not as reliable as NVIDIA 4K DLSS. Nintendo had a relationship with NVIDIA for almost a decade and I’m deeply impressed at great games that the Big N made for the Switch… including Splatoon 3 (although they use AMD’s FSR 2.0), Fire Emblem Three Houses and Engage including MONOLITHSOFT’s Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy.

Now that we’re in 2025, Nintendo and NVIDIA will continue with their relationship for a decade more. Watch!

    1. Nvidia could push Nintendo with recent hardware since it is not in their interest to keep an assembly line for “old” chips

    2. I don’t see that BS happening. Nintendo doesn’t want their system to be as expensive as the PS5 and Xbox Series X. You’re already eating crows when Nintendo brings in top quality games that are fun, challenging and unique games… especially rated M published games like Bayonetta 2 and 3.

      1. A possible hypothesis (but implausible in fact) is that Nvidia sells the price of components to Nintendo which implies less margin for the 2 in terms of console sales but on the other hand, Nintendo makes up for it mainly on the sale of games (not to mention the royalties on cartridges…) and Nvidia doesn’t really need Nintendo’s sales to bail itself out.
As I have always said: let’s wait for the revelation because all this is only hypothesis, we know absolutely nothing about the machine except its backward compatibility Switch

    1. I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

DLSS isn’t free. The Switch 2 is gonna have a weaker GPU than any consumer Ampere GPU and that affects the speed it can upscale from 1080p to 4K or even 720p to 4K by a non-trivial amount.

I think there will definitely be some games upscaled to 4K but more often than not you might be looking at 1440p or even 1080p. Using an RTX 2050 mobile as a basis of comparison, it can run Cyberpunk 2077 at 20-28 fps at 1080p with high settings. The Switch 2’s GPU is likely gonna be at least 30% slower so it would need to use DLSS just to reliable run that game at 1080p30 and can probably get it to a semi-stable 1080p60.

If Nintendo patches their first party Switch games to run at higher resolutions on Switch 2, then some of those could run at 4K even without DLSS.

  3. It’s amazing to me that back in like 2015 I was saying that successor to the Wii U needed to have a hardware file decompression block so that game sizes and load times can be reduced and no every console is going to have that. I regret not release a video saying that lol

  4. The ps5 pro was obviously their Concord tax.
There were rumors that a whole slew of ps5 games actually looked and ran worse on the ps5 pro.
Tbh, I’ve gotten to the point where art design is a thousand times more important than graphics.
I will take cartoony, overly exaggerated, semi realism, cel shaded art design, running 120fps, at 1440p over an unoptimized, 30fps capped, photo realistic graphics game every single day.
I want Elden Ring style vista’s at 1440p, 120fps all day everyday!
