Sakurai: “even if it’s the opposite of what I like, I’ll make a game if it’s necessary”

Masahiro Sakurai is best known for being the creator of the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. franchises. In the years since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate finished adding DLC characters, Sakurai has been spending his time gradually sharing his insight on video gaming development as a whole, as well as looking back at his time developing games for Hal Laboratory and later Sora Ltd.

For example, he was recently interviewed by Nikkei Cross Trend. At one point in the interview, he is asked what he thinks about in terms of creating games. Sakurai said it all comes down to the “finished image” and “the users who will play it”. He also said that “the job of making games is to create entertainment. However, if you are going to sell them, you have to think of it as work, not entertainment. That’s what it means to be a professional. Even if it’s the opposite of what I like, I’ll make it if it’s necessary”.

  1. Out of any game developers I’ve seen/heard give interviews, Sakurai consistently comes across as the most practical and intelligent. I also think the series he did on YouTube was very insightful for aspiring game devs. Can’t wait to see what his next project is.

  2. This doesn’t make me confident in the next Smash Bros. He has a perception that only he can do it (“if it’s necessary”) but seems to be out of ideas for the franchise besides adding more fighters.

Tbh I want smash ultimate to get the mk8 deluxe treatment for the switch 2, the roster is just that good that I bet if sakurai makes another smash from the ground up he would never reach the same size again when it comes to the characters, just make a better story mode, make the dlc characters base roster, add others and new stages, he could reach 100 characters with the main roster and call it Smash Bros 100 idk.
