Nintendo has quietly confirmed “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games”

Today’s Nintendo Direct was quite a weird one, but what has made the Direct even weirder is that Nintendo has, unintentionally or not, revealed a couple of more things about the successor to the Nintendo Switch that we didn’t know about before. It was discovered earlier today, for example, that the Switch 2 Joy-Con does, indeed, have a C-button that wasn’t visible in the console’s reveal trailer in January.

If that didn’t interest you, then this latest discovery likely will. Nintendo revealed Virtual Game Cards in the Direct, and the new feature has a page dedicated to it on Nintendo’s site. At the bottom of the page, Nintendo says that “Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 system”.

The phrasing, as well is the clear distinction between calling something “Switch 2 exclusive” and “Switch 2 Edition”, highly suggests that Nintendo will be doing enhanced Switch 2 versions of games that released on the Switch 1. Not only that, but apparently they will be called “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” games. There has been a lot of speculation about the matter, and even a bit of rumors, but this is the first official confirmation that seems to be pointing to this being a real thing. If so, then it’s very likely that we’ll learn more about this at the Switch 2 Direct next week.

  1. That’s concerning. I hope they don’t charge for it these Switch 2 editions. I don’t really think adding joy-con mouse support and better framerates is worth buying the game again, personally.

    1. On the PS5, using Spider-Man as an example, the PS4 version runs on the PS5 with better resolution and fps because of a patch, but if you want a a true improvement version with raytracing and remastered graphics you have to buy Spider-Man Remastered for the PS5. The difference between the first Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2 Edition might be this.

      1. You don’t know much about Nintendo. If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t be in the video game community all together. We would be playing board games all night long.

      2. They still make the cards, so I guess they’re still good? I don’t know why you’re even here if you don’t like Nintendo. Lol

        1. Charlie Wayne J Scott

Yall never played on the DS systems, did you? Plug an NDS cart into a 3DS and check the performance difference, would no extra charge. Yeah, there are 3DS exclusive games. BUT it runs old basic DS games great.

    1. Read again and RESEARCH, stupid! Furthermore, we don’t have the data whether you pay Switch 1 games to be enhanced for Switch 2. Only Nintendo has the answers while you wait patiently like a man.

  2. You are all panicking for nothing… If the console is backwards compatible, I doubt that they won’t make improvements via a patch or other especially if indeed NVIDIA’s DLSS or other stuff will be incorporated… Free patch what’s more

On the other hand, it was sure that we will still have “super deluxe ultra definitive” editions on the new switch… The question will be: it will be worth it if you already have the game on the old Switch…

  3. I imagine the Switch 2 Edition is just a download for higher res textures OR something like the AI upscaling feature they have. I absolutely cannot see them charging extra for this (could eat my own hat over that). Switch games you already own will most likely be converted into Switch 2 Edition games on the new console.

  4. Oh god.. Im getting extremely concerned about these decisions, please Nintendo do NOT let me pay for additional costs for my switch games to get an upscale like NO. I’m already getting nervous with that digital cartridge thing going on, I don’t need another bullcrap like that.

        1. I don’t think they said that they’re removing account sharing though. Also this lets you share games with people on your family plan without them needing your account on their system + you can be online playing a different game without them kicking you off and vice versa for using the same account simultaneously.

          I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t think it’s worse- it’s just a trade off.

    1. PS5 has a system in place where if you own a PS4 version of a game that also has a PS5 version, you can “upgrade” your PS4 version to the PS5 version for a small price. The wording, “Switch 2 Edition games” sounds like Switch games that are enhanced in a similar way for the Switch 2. It’s all conjecture at the moment, but don’t be too surprised if Nintendo does wind up charging for the enhanced Switch games.

      1. Yeah I’ll burn that bridge when we come to it if so. No reason to panic until it’s announced tho 😅

Ugh to play TotK in 60fps. That’d be amazing

      2. As a counterpoint, Xbox has a game upgrade program too, but most games are free to get the Series S/X upgrade from the Xbox One versions.

You’re right though, we won’t know until it’s actually out and available for people to check(unless for some reason they clarify it before release).

          1. Don’t give them too much credit. Yes it’s amazing and very pro consumer, but this is them trying to create good faith with consumers because they’ve haven’t recovered from the whole XBOX ONE catastrophe. It also became part of their plan to be more like steam and carry over almost everything to the next generation.

        1. I have mostly Xbox One physical games and got free upgrades for all of them on my series X. Even my digital purchases that have upgrades were free. Many cross gen Xbox games just have one disc for both generations since the upgrades are just part of having the game.

    1. That’s Sony’s prerogative… not Nintendo. We won’t be paying a singular penny up on enhances titles for Switch 2.

  5. Make no mistake. Nintendo is a corporation that intends to make profits wherever possible.
If the Switch 2 editions come with full upgrades (scaling, textures, frame rates, added dlc, patches, etc) then it full deserves an additional cost. This all costs time and money to do all this stuff. Sony do this and it’s completely fair.
If its a simple, game runs quicker, improved loading speeds. Then this is a different story. Again, Sony also give their consumers free ps5 upgrades.

  6. Most of the PS5 upgrades are free and the ones that aren’t usually only cost $10, even if Nintendo makes the fanbase pay for an enhanced edition it probably won’t be like paying full price. … it’s not a big deal even if ppl have to pay, most of the PS5 upgrades are free.
