Japan: Former Capcom designer faces backlash by saying Palworld ‘crossed a line that should not be crossed’

Palworld clearly has some similarities to Pokemon but anyone who has played the game knows that it is a very different beast altogether. However, former Capcom game developer Yoshiki Okamoto’s doesn’t think that way and has said in a new video that Palworld has genuinely ‘crossed a line that should not be crossed’ leading to a backlash from Japanese fans. Many pointed out that games Okamoto has previously worked on in his career usually borrowed aspects from other games. You can read more here.

Palworld had “crossed a line that should not be crossed, and I don’t want the world to become a place where this kind of thing is acceptable.”

“if a settlement is reached with Nintendo, then I think it (Palworld) will become a game that is officially fine to play. However, it is currently a game that’s being sued so it’s unacceptable. By playing the game you are supporting it, so please don’t buy it.”

This comment and his labelling of Pocketpair as an “anti-xxxx” (Okamoto bleeped out and distorted the last kanji character of the word in both the audio and subtitle in the video) prompted a flood of criticism in the comments — and many did not hold back.

  1. I Played completely through Palworld, it’s not a Pokemon clone and even if it was I’m against dictatorship and Monopolies. Nintendo and the Pokemon company are in the wrong.

    1. Holy crap both your name & ignorant take on the matter are pathetic. It’s gamer’s fault for so blatantly comparing it to Pokémon that it’s even known as “Pokémon with GUNS”. You’re in denial if you think it’s not overly similar to Pokémon you filthy casual.

    1. Palworld is a Fantastic Game. You are sounding like a drone for Nintendo. I used to be like that, hating games that weren’t from Nintendo or on Nintendo consoles. Palworld is great and is very different to pokemon but guess what?, It’s definitely better than any modern Pokemon game.

      1. How can it be better if it’s nothing like Pokemon? 🤔

Sounds like you went from drone to instant hater. Doesn’t matter what it is, you’ll refuse to give it a try, and still call it inferior.

  2. Who cares if they have similar features, play whatever you want. If by playing and enjoying Palworld is considered supporting it then i guess im supporting it.

  3. Copied Pokémon? Hmm, I guess I missed the Pokémon entry where you got to actually engage in combat alongside your Pokémon 🤔

    1. People hating on Palworld should also be hating on Sonic for copying Mario, Lets hate on all none Mario Platformers, Kart Racers, and Party games all together oh but wait you don’t unless Nintendo tells you they are bad. If you actually play through Palworld you see how amazing of a game it is and that it’s not a Pokemon clone. The guy that used the term embarrassment, i think he is the embarrassment.

  4. I think he is right and it’s not like anyone’s saying you cannot derive inspiration from Pokemon. That’s exactly what Digimon did and that did not raise eyebrows like Palworld has. The creatures in Palworld are shameless rip-offs and is the general art style. It has not done enough to claim it is its own thing.

    1. Same as Pokemon are shameless ripoff from Dragon Quest. No one said word. Giana Sister is a ripoff from Mario, no one said a word. Battle Chess is a ripoff of Chess, no one said a word. Burger King is ripoff from McDonalds, no one said a word.

But now, Palword is out and copied Nintendo… SCANDALOUS!!! Yeah, shup up fanboys and swallow hard. Palworld won’t go anywhere.

    2. Yet that’s not what they were sued for. If that was the issue, Nintendo would have sued for copyright infringement instead of this Bogus Patent Infringement. Had they done that, I’m sure the world’s public would have sided with Nintendo instead of Pocket Pair

  5. I saw pokemon is just monster rancher no?
Or a thousand other pre-pokemon gatcha style collection….

Only reason Nintendo went hard against it is because of the throwing of the ball and a few sprites.
