Digital Foundry concludes Xenoblade Chronicles X Switch port “is excellent”

The team at Digital Foundry have examined the recent Nintendo Switch port of Xenoblade Chronicles X and have come away impressed by what they have played. The original game pushed boundaries on the Wii U and so many were wondering whether or not there would be any significant changes to make use of the capabilities of the more powerful Switch console. Thankfully, the game both looks and runs better on Nintendo’s newer hardware. The concluding thoughts from the team at Digital Foundry is that Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is “a genuine improvement across the board.”

“With the leap to Switch, the game using dynamic resolution scaling and tops out at a native 1080p, making it noticeably sharper than the original game, while the portable mode seems to mostly match the resolution of the Switch’s built-in display at up to 720p.”

“Performance also hasn’t changed much on the new platform. The game proceeds at a largely steady 30fps, but it’s certainly not locked. A 60fps flag has been found in the game’s code, so perhaps there’s a possibility that we’ll see a 60fps release on Switch 2?”

“I do have one nitpick: the pre-rendered video sequences all exhibit raised black levels and therefore look washed out on Switch, something that wasn’t an issue on Wii U. It’s not a huge deal due to the relative lack of video sequences, but it’s perhaps something that could be fixed in a future patch.”

“It’s also worth noting that since the game ships on a cartridge or is downloaded to flash memory, there is no need for an additional installation pack. If you recall, the original game offered an optional download for disc users to improve streaming performance – but if you didn’t download it when the Wii U shop was running, that pack is no longer available. It’s nice not to have to worry about that detail now, as it loads faster than Wii U right out of the gate.”

    1. Tell you don’t know how PS1 or even PS2 games really looks, without telling you don’t know how PS1/2 games really look.

Xenoblade could run like this on PS4 and nobody would complain.

    2. Well, real gamers know it’s PlayStation, there’s no such thing as a PS1, and the PSOne was a mini with a built in LCD screen for traveling purposes, so it didn’t have it’s own library.

Real gamers also know this game is graphically much more robust than any PlayStation or even PS2 game, it’s actually on par with most PS3/360 titles when you consider the scope of the world.

And finally, real gamers don’t give a fuck about graphics in any capacity. Casual hobbyists who care about graphics aren’t playing more than one maybe two games a year because they would be hypocritical for playing games that don’t meet their incredibly high, superficial standards.

So we’ve established you’re ignorant, uneducated, and definitely not a gamer. Good job!

      1. Before bragging about “real gamers”, you should get your facts straight: The PSOne didn’t have a built in screen. 🤷‍♂️

    3. @Ninten turdss tell me you don’t know what PS1 graphics look like without telling me you don’t know what PS1 graphics look like.

    4. You gotta be a kid because if a grown man was on here saying shit like this then damn that would be one of the saddest men on the planet lmfao

    5. I suppose you have a big tech channel and a lot of knowledge to make such claim over the digital foundry that goes into detail how the game can even look better than Halo Infinite from a hardware more powerful than the switch. teach them, Mr. Ninten turdss, with your overwhelming knowledge.

      what a clown.

    1. @CFG. As an avid Scarlet player I can say XCX looks and runs better than Scarlet and Violet. Shiny hunting does make some of it’s issues not that bad but it’s still bad just not launch bad.

      1. Is shiny hunting in Scarlet the same as Legends Arceus? I liked catching shiny Pokemon in LA. Honestly, I spent my final days with the game just catching shinies and giving them away online.

        1. @CFG. No, in but does have outbreaks that is slightly different in SV, in that you need to knock out 60 to increase odds plus add modifiers like shiny sandwiches to boost the odds plus adding the odds of the shiny charm. While they don’t have the overworld shiny sound the shinies are easier to hunt.

  1. Surprise to see that this time digital foundry did a better review than the reviewer from My Nintendo News themselves…
