Mario Kart World physical copies to be $80

When Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct began, the first thing shown was the Mario Kart game that had been teased back in January. The game received a bunch of new footage, and it is now officially called Mario Kart World. The game will be a launch title for the Switch 2 when it launches on June 5th. That said, you may be curious how much the game will cost.

Well, we have an update on that, and it isn’t going to be cheap at all. It has been confirmed that buying the game physically will result in having to pay $80, or £75. The game costs a little less digitally, but if you’re planning on buying the Switch 2 and getting the new Mario Kart game, then you’re going to need to pay a lot of money for it.

“$80 for Nintendo games…that’s certainly a turn off.”

well the new cartridge is faster and faster means more expensive, the same logic applies to M.2 NVMe SSDs, why do you think an M.2 at 7000MHz is so expensive compared to one at 5000MHz?

    1. It’s probably because of the open world aspect and it’s new mechanics features in it. I was hoping they will stick to the same price as the Wii U and the original Switch honestly but it seems like that’s out of the question.

      1. The new Donkey Kong game will be $70. MKWorld price seems to be a special case because of the big map, free roam and content. It also will be cheaper digitally, £58.99, (according to the source of this post, Video Game Chronicles) which is around $76.50 with a free conversion, however, it could be cheaper.

        1. Ah I see. Most Nintendo games will be $70 with few exceptions. Easy guess is the next $80 game will be the next mainline Zelda.

      2. I’m sorry but NOTHING about game design justifies hiking a price. You people are unbelievable.

  1. That’s a big blow… Nintendo is looking more and more corporate. I miss the Iwata/Reggie days when they were concern and loyal to the fanbase.

  2. is the color red that expensive? lol I wonder what’s the capacity of the new Switch 2 gamecard that made it cost $80. My guess is 32gb.

    1. Tariffs, My Fav New Buzz Term

Yup, it’s definitely United States tariffs. That’s why it’s 90€ in Europe.

    2. What an ignorant comment. That would mean it’d be respectively cheaper in non-US countries, which it is not.

  3. I mean… everything else has gotten more expensive. There’s no reason to think video games could be immune forever.

Indie games will be the last bastion of affordable gaming.

    1. Umm, are you trying to tell me the gaming industry doesn’t report billions in net profit per year? That’s what you’re trying to say. Ignoring reality.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THE PRICE INCREASE.

  4. Shot in the back, by Buford Tannen, over ̶a̶ ̶m̶a̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶$̶8̶0̶ a copy of Mario Kart World? What kind of a future do you call that?!

  5. This is where Nintendo are completely out of touch. Another site has said $90 for physical. There is already a huge backlash on this and it will be interesting to see if this gets reduced before launch.

And then they are charging for World Tour which is a bloody tutorial on the system.

At least PS5 added in Astro Bot for free and that game was amazing.

    1. On the contrary, Nintendo is perfectly aware of the realities… What many forget here is that the price of games has barely changed in more than 20 years! While the cost of development is only rising… They “invented” DLCs to bail out (a little) the cost but it’s clear that it’s not enough anymore…

Then, don’t forget that even if 80€ seems expensive, it’s barely 10€ more expensive than zelda tears of the kingdom! While the cost of game cards must be higher on the new switch as well as to develop games

What I understand is that Nintendo is gradually signing the death of physical games, proof? Mario Kart World costs less digitally…

  7. I wonder how high the prices would have to go before certain fans would stop defending the bump. I understand $70 now. Testing $80 because you know devoted fans will still pay is just predatory.

    1. Apparently a hundred bucks or so, considering all the extremely illogical arguments that have no basis in reality whatsoever being tossed about to justify what is obviously pure arrogance.

  8. Everyone thinks it is because of the open world and map etc.
Mario Kart and most likely most multiplayer games will cost more due to the game sharing. Your buying one cartridge but can have up to 4 people use it at once. That alone especially in my household saves us from buying 4 cartridges or copies.
