Nintendo Switch 2 Edition physical games are Switch carts with an upgrade code (update)

Update: This has now been confirmed as incorrect. Nintendo says that Nintendo Switch 2 Editions contain the full game on the cartridge including the upgrade.

The physical video game collectors amongst you won’t be pleased to learn that the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition video games, which are enhanced Nintendo Switch games taking advantage of the more powerful Switch 2 hardware, will be an original Nintendo Switch game with a download code for the upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. This means that you won’t get a Nintendo Switch 2 cartridge, just a regular cartridge with an in-box download code to upgrade to the enhanced version.

According to a Nintendo UK Support Rep, Switch 2 Editions of physical games like Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Metroid Prime 4 contain a download code for the upgrade pack along with a Switch 1 version cart of the game

    1. Anonymous Skywalker

I’m kinda a bit torn but at least I can just buy the upgrade and the Switch 1 separate if I need to or just the upgrade if I already have the game. On the other hand I’m kinda sad it won’t be on the Switch 2 cartridge but I can see why they won’t do it for financial reasons and it’d be kinda a waste. At least we do get choices so there’s that.

  1. Actually preferable to me. This way I can play the super fancy Switch 2 Edition, and the original Switch 1 version on my oled or lite if my family happens to be playing our new Switch 2. That wouldn’t be an option if they were Red switch carts

    1. All I’ve got to say is this is fake news and it’s so poor that you’re not checking anything before posting. There are actual conversations to be had about stuff with the Switch 2 but it’s being lost with false information that people are just believing without any investigation. Have some integrity about your news site instead of just taking advantage of people’s anger.

  2. What I’m interested in knowing is: what happens when you put a cartridge from the old Switch into the new one? Nothing? Do you have to download an update?
And are these “Switch 2 Edition” cartridges mandatory even if you already own the games on the first Switch?

    1. A “Switch 2 Edition” game is a Switch 1 game with an upgrade patch with Switch 2 features. If you already own Breath of the Wild you can buy (or download if you have NSO) the Switch 2 Edition upgrade when you put your Switch 1 Breath of the Wild into your Switch 2. The upgrade will …probably… cost around $10 US, though I haven’t yet heard actual pricing. For some Switch 1 games that haven’t been announced with Switch 2 Editions, like Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, there will be a free patch on Switch 2 to make the game run better.

      1. Yes Kalorous, this would make sense. Is it reality though? Would like a confirmation. There’s what makes sense and then there’s what Nintendo does.

      2. I had already understood this but I realized (a little late.. ^^) that I was incomplete…

My question is mainly to know if its “switch 2 edition” updates are mandatory or not to be able to play the games of the old one on the new one?
Because as I already said that I refuse to pay for a “simple” patch that only brings 4K 60 fps, if I can play the games of the old one on the new one without substantial improvement it’s fine with me too

But I haven’t seen this information anywhere more, Nintendo has provided a list of a (very) large number of incompatible or partially incompatible games… and we don’t know if it’s going to get better or not (and for the curious in the list, we find a certain Doom Eternal)

    2. Apparently, If you own the game on the first Nintendo Switch, you can play it on the NS2 normally but without the upgrades in resolution and fps. You need to purchase the upgrade pack to update visuals and framerate. However, in some games there will be a free update that may improve performance and add new features, like GameShare. Some examples are Super Mario Odyssey and Pokémon Scarlet/Violet.

      1. Not happy to see Nintendo be this cheap and lazy. The minor graphics updates are one thing, but this also means Mario Party and Kirby will now not have a physical version with the DLC expansions. Should have just made these Switch 2 carts, they even come in Switch 2 cases so its very misleading to just re use Switch 1 carts. Nintendo is handling this very poorly.

  3. I converted to all digital, so I don’t care.
It’s still the Switch 2 game box, but with a black Switch game inside? If yes, who cares?

    1. Also, I would like to see the whole conversation between the person who asked about this and Nintendo’s answer. Because in the mail from Nintendo, it’s only saying the upgrade will be a download code. 🤷‍♂️

  4. I really thought that Metroid Prime 4 Beyond would be fully on the Switch 2 game card and I wouldn’t have to worry about it like the other games with Switch 2 editions, but it seems it really is a Switch 1 game with an upgrade. I really hope this isn’t more of an incentive not to have the full games in the cards later on with future titles.

  5. Oh wow, this is just… jeez, the lenghts nintendo will go to sell you the same old game not only at full price, but even more expensive than the original. This honestly so scummy, and it’s already outrageous they try to sell a game like Botw, that came out 8 years ago not only at full price, but also ten dollars more expensive. Do not buy this people, seriously, do not, why? because you can easily get a used copy for far cheaper and pay the extra for the dumb upgrade, since you are literally buy the exact same game as the switch. Ugg, nintendo is really having a ps3 moment, hope it bites them in the butt.

    1. Ah, I see.

As a collector, it’s a tiny bit disappointing, but a little reassuring in a way, as well?

Either way I don’t really mind. Anyone who hasn’t bought these games I feel could easily pick up a Switch 1 copy for cheap on sale from a retailer/ebay used if they’d rather not pay extra, and then upgrade. Either that or just pay a little more for the convenience.

I know there are those who collect specific cart revisions to have all DLC downloaded— so I know they’ve been having nothing but bad news recently,,,, uh oh,,,

  6. And here we see the extraordinarily dim “DROP-THE-PRICEers” in their natural habitat, yelling their braindead message on a fan-run site where no Nintendo employee, much less one who would be able to act on their issue, will ever see it.

Will they ever get enough brain cells together to realise this? Probably not.
They’re just followers you see, incapable of any independant thought and most likely make their living as McDonald’s cashiers, or spend their life living on benefits.

What a sad life these unfortunate creatures lead.

    1. And here we see the extraordinarily foolish “David Attenborougher” in its natural habit, writing inane comments in a vague allusion to the masterful Mister Attenborough, copying all their personality, their form and prose from a senile old man, about whom such jokes ran cold decades back.

Will this organism ever garner enough intelligence to realise how futile and unamusing such comments are? Certainly not. It simply acts as an impersonation of an impersonation, ad infinitum, endlessly spewing out the same old phrases in a desperate venture that someone, somewhere, equally as lonely and hopeless, might smile, and it will be the first smile their existence will have caused in all their short, empty lives.

What a pathetic, irrelevant existence the Attenboroughers have.

      1. And here we see the extraordinarily foolish “Humour Checker” in its natural habitat, writing the least funny comments since the creation of man. It blames and belittles, calling others “impersonations” without any trace of irony for it, itself, is copying them. The creature is incapable of realising this, just as it is incapable of reproducing, and hence we should cherish a rare sighting as this, for within a century, these Checkers will all have died out, made extinct by their ineptitude in the reproductive faculties.

Not one iota of wisdom will ever be gleamed from reading such words, to say nothing of the reams of potential and loss caused in writing them. They must simply move from forum to forum, copy and pasting the same lowly set of meaningless, dead-end insults, all lacking any actual motivation or satire, only a lifeless husk of bored silent frivolity, as what few supporters they have slowly move away in repugnance.

What a sorrowful life these meaningless creatures lead.

  7. The absolute state of this site comment section. I think the admin kinda give implicit support to those drop the price comments since they never actually delete any of them.

  8. It won’t impact me as I’m pretty sure my Switch 2 library will be 95% digital (the odd gifted physical game). But obviously it’s a lame way of doing this. Obviously, everyone is complaining about the price of the games at the moment, but what I hate most is the lack of compromise. If you’re going to charge more for games, then well I mean there has been a lot of inflation, but give us something in return, like actually packaging a cartridge with the game on it (like they used to) rather than selling a scrap of paper.

It’s the increasing price and also reducing quality that offends me.

    1. as for the new physical copies obviously that for those who dont already own the switch versions. like for someone who doesnt own a switch but is getting a switch 2 as their first console.

  9. This comment area show how people without their brain and only know to yell “DROP THE PRICE” on a fan-powered website without any Nintendo staffs,

plus a blog moderator who never care to keep the community with only healthy comments,

could make the this news site was much better than already-toxic Nintendolife becomes a site same as them in just in one week.

  10. As a collector, I’m perfectly at ease with this. I’m actually glad I don’t have to battle that ridiculous personal internal need to upgrade my physical NS1 games to NS2 games just to have them on a red cartridge. I can sit happy with my NS1 cartridges and choose whether or not to upgrade them.

That being said, it would be nice to get a proper NS2 cartridge for Metroid Prime 4 as I don’t have that in my collection yet. Since I’ll be holding off on getting an NS2 for a year or two, I’ll just hope for a red release of Metroid in the mean time and just get whichever is best available once I do.

  11. i actually think this is a very very scummy practice.
i am paying $80 for a physical. I would expect a Switch 2 cartridge with the DLC packed.

    1. Can’t believe the amount of people who are okay with this. If you just want a cheaper way to play some of your switch 1 upgrades then an upgrade path is fine and should exist. But what’s the point of having a physical copy sit on store shelves for full price when new copies of these games are cheaper. Nintendo saying these enhanced versions will be physical during their direct is blasphemy. A digital code printed on paper isn’t physcial. This approach only limits the options for consumers which only benefits nintendo. Guess all these enhanced editions go poof once the store shuts down. Don’t want to buy an $80 re-release then don’t, but some of us just want the option.
