Digital Foundry: It’s “pretty mind-blowing” that Ubisoft has Star Wars Outlaws running on Switch 2

One of the more surprising games to see during the Nintendo Switch 2-themed Nintendo Direct was Star Wars Outlaws, which is currently only available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Speaking in a recent video Digital Foundry technology editor Richard Leadbetter had the following to say about the inclusion, “I think this one’s quite surprising, to be honest, Star Wars Outlaws. This is like a technologically demanding game on the new Snowdrop engine for Ubisoft Massive. The concept that it’s running on this class of hardware is pretty mind-blowing, I’d say.”

Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie chimed in stating that Star Wars Outlaws “a really exciting port, possibly an impossible port, if you will.” That’s because it’s such a large game utilizing features like ray tracing. Plus, there isn’t say a PS4 edition, while other third-party titles like Elden Ring and Street Fighter 6 did come to last-gen consoles.”

Lastly, Digital Foundry video producer Alex Battaglia stated that Star Wars Outlaws is “By far the most technically ambitious game that we’ve seen mentioned as having been ported to Switch 2, like by far.”

  1. Is it? Or do DF need to reassess their preconceptions of what the systems capabilities would be and not just lazily assume Nintendo’s got crap tech

    1. You are one of the few commenters here on the usually mid comment section that actually grasp the big pictures of things. It’s usually full of trolls and Tentris.

  2. Ummm yea ok. DF is pretty lame honestly. I literally listen to nothing they say just like IGN. Unreliable and u trustworthy.

  3. The fact that ports are already mind blowing it’s uhhhh… it’s not good. Hopefully I’m wrong but I hope we will see a third party support for at least 3 years before it becomes the “Nintendo and indies machine”

  4. Outlaws is a game I didn’t expect to be on the Switch 2, don’t know if I’m going to pick it up or not. Either way if it runs well then maybe I will.

  5. The game was poorly made when it launched and the story is very lackluster, but if it’s true that the Switch 2 managed to handle the game amazingly well, then I can see more big games like it coming to the Switch 2 like RDR2 and maybe even GTA VI.

    1. RDR2 100% can run on the Switch 2 since it’s a PS4 game. The challenging ones are mostly PS5 only AAA games from western studios. I bet most japanese games even if it target only PS5 the majority will still run on Switch 2, just because most japanese will be on it, special price of Switch 2 in japan undercutting PS5 by a LOT.

    1. Why would they? 🤷‍♂️ They already know everything about the hardware by looking at Youtube videos and screenshots. That’s how pro they are. 😑

  6. To be fair to Digital Foundry, they didn’t believe the footage shown was really running on Switch hardware and they were excited to see what it would really end up like.

DF loves “impossible ports” because in the best cases they showcase the ingenuity of devs in accommodating hardware that shouldn’t be able to run their game, and with new hardware it helps to understand the strengths and limits of the hardware.

They weren’t excited because it proves the hardware is capable, but because it helps them understand what it’s capabilities are.

I thoroughly enjoyed Witcher 3 on my Switch, and entirely understood that I wouldn’t always reach 30fps and that that the resolution/graphical features would be severely restricted, but it was a marvel that it ran at all. This gives them the opportunity to test the game on hardware that has access to considerably less power than the Series S and see just how far Ubisoft is able to push it.

They weren’t praising or condemning the port, they were just fascinated by the ability to see it running a game that’s never targeted hardware with the limitations of a tightly budgeted handheld.

  7. Their remark about the new switch at least proves that either they have become incompetent or they are “on purpose” producing shocking news (clicked…)… or both

At least like many other sites (I’m thinking of eurogamer..)They have lost credibility in my eyes

No, but really how can we judge the real power of a machine on simple trailers?!

At the time of the ps2, what would they have said? “It is clearly weaker than the Dremcast”?

“This gives them the opportunity to test the game on hardware that has access to much less power than the Series S”

-Uh, no… It is clearly at the same level and we have not yet seen the use of ray tracing or DLSS.

  8. Mortal Kombat 1 runs on Switch. It does not mean the game is anywhere near the same level of quality as it is on other platforms.

    Also, screw Outlaws. Garbage.
