US: GameStop to continue to cancel bots and duplicate orders to reopen inventory for Switch 2 pre-orders

Those of you who tried unsuccessfully to place a Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order with North American video game retailer GameStop will be pleased to learn that the company says it is working to cancel bots from securing pre-orders and cancel those with multiple orders to free up Nintendo Switch 2 inventory. When pre-orders opened the GameStop website became unresponsive and crashed, though some managed to get through and secure their pre-order for the long-awaited system.

    1. They’re getting annoyed that people are using the service they provide? What, you think this isn’t going exactly the way they expected it to?

      1. Bots and scalpers didn’t order games or more importantly, accessories. GameStop makes no almost no money on hardware or games, so they’d absolutely rather sell to actual customers.

  1. I remember reading an interview with a scalper at the beginning of the ps5 who said he “didn’t understand” why the players were “mad” at them, that anyway what he was doing was “legal” and that if the players are willing to put $500 in a console they can put 100 or 200 years more…

They really live on another planet

    1. “they can put 100 or 200 years more…”

I don’t doubt that for some people, making over 500 dollars would actually take them over a 100 years to do, but I’m pretty sure that’s not what you meant.

    2. It really is cute they think price gouging hard-to-get tech to get back the money they wasted on buying a product they were never going to use themselves plus a bit more is the right thing to do.

    3. If consumers didn’t keep enabling these kinds of behaviors by buying the product at a hyperinflated price from the scalper they’d become a dying breed pretty quickly when they take loss after loss. Same with Pokémon cards.

  2. Love that GameStop is cracking down on bots, it gives real fans a fair shot! Also, if you’re planning a chill day after getting your Switch 2, check out some awesome food deals.

  3. Who is buying this anyway? Over priced console. Over priced games you truly don’t own. Seriously. Who’s buying this crap

  4. Idk why they just don’t switch back to in person presale… that will really make the bots and scalpers useless… I got my preorder in person no stress about being in line waiting to only find out they sold out even having to get other bundles what I really don’t need to make a preorder. Make people take a trip to the store have them feel something special about preordering and security of not missing out on release date.

  5. Good on GameStop for cracking down on those bots! Hopefully, this means a fair chance for actual gamers to snag a Switch 2. Fingers crossed I can finally get one!

  11. GameStop really needs to get its act together. Cancelling bots is cool, but how about fixing that website? I’m sure there’s a neat tool for streamlining all this.

  14. That’s great to hear that GameStop is taking steps to ensure fair access to Switch 2 pre-orders by cracking down on bots and duplicate orders. Scalpers and automated systems have been a huge issue for high-demand products, making it frustrating for genuine fans to secure their purchases. By reopening inventory for real customers, GameStop is showing a commitment to fairness and improving the shopping experience.

  15. That’s great to hear GameStop is taking action against bots! I remember trying to pre-order the PS5 and it was a nightmare with all the scalpers. What really helped me last time was setting up browser notifications from multiple retailers – though even then it took weeks of persistence.

Speaking of gaming frustrations, I was recently looking for that iconic “It’s dangerous to go alone” Zelda quote (you know, for motivation while waiting for the Switch 2 release) and stumbled upon aimoviequotes. It’s actually super handy – you can find quotes by theme at https://www.aimoviequotes.com. Might help pass the time until we can all actually get our hands on the Switch 2!

Anyone else have tips for dealing with these pre-order situations? I’m curious if people are having better luck with other retailers or if everyone’s experiencing the same issues.

  16. Read through this and it’s good to see GameStop finally pushing back on bot and duplicate orders. The Switch 2 preorder rush will still be messy, but giving real buyers a fairer shot makes sense. 18. Man, I totally feel you on the offline pre-order thing. Back when I could just walk into a store for my collector’s editions, life was SO much easier—no bots sniping everything, no panic refreshing pages. I remember chilling with other fans in line, actually holding the item in my hands before paying… those were the days.

Now? Between midnight drops and website crashes, pre-ordering’s turned into some kind of stress Olympics. Ngl, I’ve lost sleep over this crap—literally. That’s how I stumbled onto sleepbrownnoise while doomscrolling after missing yet another restock. Their free brown noise tracks (https://www.sleepbrownnoise.com/) lowkey saved my sanity when I’d get too amped up. Black screen mode + timer means I’m not staring at my phone all night waiting for alerts.

But yeah, bring back in-person pre-orders already. Let us camp out if we want to! At least then you KNOW you’ve secured your copy, none of this digital hunger games bs. (Pro tip though—if you’re stuck online like the rest of us, sleepbrownnoise has this 10-hour thunderstorm loop that’s perfect for calming pre-order nerves. Just saying.)
