You will soon be able to make your Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons your own as the side plates can be removed and replaced with different colours to give them a unique look. Accessory manufacturers have already designed different plates which you can purchase and use. This is similar to Sony’s PlayStation 5 which side panels can be removed and replaced with different colours and is a nice touch.

Interesting detail.
Hm, now I wonder how will they handle it on the software side. All Switch 1 Joy-cons have their shell’s colour encoded in their flash memory, so that the Switch will know what colour to display them in. Will they omit that in Switch 2, or have they come up with some interesting trick to achieve it?
The color doesn’t change. 🤷♂️
@ryuStack – It looks like only the side panels can be swapped. So the Control Sticks and the strip with the buttons will still be the same colors. But you know they’ll officially release more colors throughout the years. It won’t affect how they’re displayed in games, most the time people use outlines anyways. The coloring isn’t all that important, it’s the layout of the buttons. You’ll still know which side is which based on the layout, and if it’s 4 players then they’ll just use P1, P2, P3, P4….
But actually, I think people are jumping the gun here, saying they’re customizable. It looks like this product is just a 3rd party replacement kit. The strips are still the same colors, just a way to replace them. Part of the product name is “Replacement Decorative Strip”. Why anyone would need to replace that, who knows, but if it’s something they can make and sell, they will, even if you don’t need it. This will likely lead to 3rd party customized plates, but so far it seems they’re just the same thing, but a 3rd party piece of plastic. Nothing official from Nintendo. In fact, I bet by using these, it will technically void your warranty.
Regarding the warranty, there’s no way this voids it. We can compare it to the Pro Controller’s handles – you can unscrew one screw per handle, and change them for a different colour and texture, and then change them back. With this, it looks like you don’t even need to touch any screws, just unclip it and clip it back, similar to the small new 3DS cover plates.
Which brings me to another point – maybe you’re right and they don’t plan to make it customizable on the user level, but plan on making different coloured or themed versions, and these clips make it easier to manufacture and combine, just like the different themed Pro Controllers with their colorful handles.
Even more interesting how Mynintendonews can post articles that specifically mention PS5 and make a comparison, but if anyone mentions PlayStation in the comment section everyone gets all huffy because someone mentioned PlayStation on a Nintendo fourm. … Just thought i’d point that out.
Then don’ prompt it by stiring the pot.
Of all people, you should realise how juvenile this site can get.
Really not interested in those side panels I wanna change the whole thing.
Yeah not a huge fan of the black color I wish there where a few color joy-con options, maybe will get some in the next few months.
I like how the new design differentiates them from the original Joy Cons, but I can understand the two of you. At the very least, I’m sure that after some time has passed someone will be doing modifications to customize the outer shell of the Joy Con 2 that you can look into.
I hope there will never ever be other colored Joy-Con, so I’ll never be tempted to unnecessarily waste money on them. 😤
Kind of a neat feature, if something that’ll be used less than the IR Camera (Not being mean, just I feel like this will be one of those neat features that people use once and then never again)
I could actually see this being quite useful if there are no plans to make any Joy-Cons with other base colors. If everyone brought their own SW2 Joy-Cons with different pane colors it helps everyone know which pair belongs to whom- little Timmy has the red panes, Johnny has blue, Patty uses purple, etc.
Honestly, I’d rather have Home Menu Themes like they had on the 3DS than being able to customize the controller.
I was never a Joycon fan always playing with pro controllers.
