GameChat requires phone number linked to your Nintendo account

Nintendo is looking to make its array of games more social with the availability of GameChat on the Nintendo Switch 2. The feature allows you to video chat with your friends while playing your favourite games. Naturally the streaming feature is ripe for abuse, so as a precaution Nintendo is requiring all users to link their phone number. This should go some way in allaying fears that the app might be misused, though some will not be happy that they have to give provide their phone number to use the GameChat application.

  1. Given Nintendo are over 20 years late with basic chat functionality.
I’d be steering very clear of this feature until its gone through real testing and various patches.

      1. From what I remember (correct me if I’m wrong). The experience was incredibly clunky, relied on an app, was only supported by a few games and didn’t have options for parties.
I referenced “20 years late with basic chat functionality.”

  2. Ohhh no, we are NOT doing this again like when Blizzard required a phone number to play Overwatch 2 when that first released. If you can already only GameChat with people on your friend list, wouldn’t that mitigate most of the concerns of abuse since you already know these people you’re chatting with?

Or, you know, there’s also a BLOCK function that even Switch 1 already has?

The more caveats Nintendo reveals about Switch 2 (like that they can brick your console if they think you’re modding it), the more I want to see something bad happen to the higher-ups over there.

    1. People who have an issue with this need to be investigated, like everyone has a phone number. What is the issue? Just don’t break the rules and you’ll be fine.

      1. I’m sorry, it’s a problem for me to not want to give that information out? What if Nintendo’s database gets hacked and then those people have my number (on top of all other info tied to an account)? Changing a number isn’t like changing a password.

“People who have an issue with this need to be investigated”

        For what, exactly?

        1. It is impossible to steal a properly functioning database since it is in the form of keys that can only decrypt the data appearing within it… I’m obviously talking about ‘properly functioning’. Then with your mentality, if you are afraid of having your data stolen, then don’t come on the internet, right…

          1. Nintendo has already been hacked before. To imply that it’s impossible for them to be hacked again is naive at best and a failure to safeguard yourself and others at worst.

Bruh, they ain’t asking you for your social security number, maiden name of your mother, the latitude and longitude of the sun and the square root of pi. I get the concerns but chill out my dude.

  3. If you aren’t doing anything wrong as far as abusing the game chat feature, then you don’t have anything to worry about.

  4. You people treat console releases for formats you dislike like political elections… Smear after smear after smear…
And you just keep circulating the same gloom and doom, misinformation messages.
    Zzzzzzzz

You simply Nintendo hater the Switch is a massive success , with tons of great games and switch two will only build on that… nobody has the first party games of consistent quality that Nintendo has, or the fun factor… or a system that can be played anywhere basically… maybe you’re on the wrong site .. it sounds like you might want to be on a PlayStation or an Xbox site, unless you just like to come here and trash and Nintendo

      2. No company needs to have my phone number. I’m so sick of this. I wanted to order a Walmart exclusive DVD, but they wanted my phone number. Like, no you don’t need my number in order to sell me a f’ing banana. “Play by the rules and you’ll be fine”. What? I’m just tired of getting robot calls and handing over my personal phone number in order to buy a concert ticket. F all the way off.

  5. I got Discord and my OLED already. Nintendo can fly a kite outta their ass for the prices they’re asking for everything. (And yes, I am employed. Eat shit, Tendies.)
