Japan: Nintendo Switch 2 already outsold lifetime sales of Xbox Series X|S and PS5 Digital Edition

Japanese flag

The Nintendo Switch 2 has proved to be a success the world over, however, one nation which is particularly keen on the Nintendo’s latest platform is naturally Japan. Recent sales data has shown that the Nintendo Switch 2 has already outsold the lifetime sales of the Xbox Series X|S console and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition proving once again that Nintendo truly dominates in the Land of the Rising Sun.

    1. The Japanese have 2 versions: a basic one like the West and another specific to them that is cheaper but cut off from many features, for example, it is zoned.

        1. I was checked, the difference is 136 €…the zoning does not justify such a gap which is why I am suspicious…but it is also true that in Japan, consoles are very lightly taxed (5% if I remember correctly)

          1. Since things are assembled in Japan, there’s less overhead for them. Tarrifs have also always played a role in exporting, and even the stock in Taiwan, is just a stone throw away from them compared to everything shipped to the West, so again, the overhead is much smaller.

$100 cheaper is insanely gross though. I could definitely go for a switch 2 that was NA region locked if it meant it was even $50 cheaper. I’m sure it shut a lot of people up about the price.

            1. They’re assembled in China… And anyway, it’s not special treatment. The yen is just weak. The people actually buying them there see that price even higher than we do. Switch 2 increased in price by 50% relative to Switch in the US and most of Europe. I think Australia is lower. In Japan, however? It costs 67% more… for the region locked version. The normal version is more than double.

  1. $80 price tag doesn’t scare me. I spent more on microtransactions on games like Fortnite.

So I picked up a NSW2 + MK World Bundle and am having a blast! :D

    1. Yeah, most people complaining about the price tag are the same ones who spend way more in gacha, microtransactions overall or season passes.

It’s just that it’s the trend to hate on Nintendo.

      1. I’m sorry I’m not supporting that 80 dollar price tag, am I missing out on the new Mario kart? Absolutely would love to play it. But I don’t want to be part of another price increase, Nintendo is getting way too greedy and I’m not going to support them just because they make great games.

        1. News flash. Sony and Microsoft are also raising prices. Even if you insist on pretending videogames are somehow required to ignore inflation, don’t pretend like Nintendo is some greedy outlier while ignoring every other major gaming company.

          1. Stop putting words in my mouth, when the hell did i said anything about Xbox and sony?
I don’t like Xbox nor sony

It is about setting the industry standard and making other companies feel comfortable. The new Borderlands has went down at launch price due to backlash. Last gen 70 dollars was the highest price we paid for any game on any platform, which is completely fine. Mario Kart of all games is not as impressive to warrant a higher price tag and setting a higher pricing standard for companies to follow suit.

          3. There is a difference between Sony/Microsoft and Nintendo. For starters, The games are much higher quality than the Switch games. Damn near every Switch first party game is just a cartoony artstyle. Pokemon Scarlet/Violet was probably the worst release in the entire history of Pokemon. The budget needed for Switch games are significantly smaller than for PlayStation games on average

Nintendo wants to increase their game prices by $20 for doing the absolute minimum amount of effort. All while giving fans less ownership of their games. So not only are they increasing game prices but they are also saving money by discouraging physical sales and pushing digital.
I can play 95% of my PS5 games with no Internet connection. I OWN these games.

They released a slightly updated console for a huge price increase. And ONE new 1st party exclusive that is slightly better than the previous installment.

Oh, And let’s not forget the button that you need a paid subscription to use lmao. But hold on! Surely that button does something revolutionary! Something innovative! Oh, Nevermind. It’s just a worse version of Discord (Which is free on other consoles).

You guys need to wake up

      2. Not a “Trend”. Nintendo has just become a trash company. Zero innovation. Zero decent launch titles. Zero new ips. Zero user rights. Zero respect for fans. 100% Greed.

This is coming from someone who owns 5 Switch’s. And almost every main first party game (On the Switch/Wii U). Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Kirby etc.

Was a fan of Nintendo after our Commodore 64 was obsolete. 80 dollars is gross. No Game is worth 80. Games that cost 70 aren’t worth it. There are only a FEW exceptions. I am no Micro transaction player. I’m a player that misses the old days when Nintendo actually wanted stuff to be affordable. There stupid idea with 3rd party card keys is failing them and I am eager to see what else will fail. I was with Nintendo I even got a WiiU. I LOVE IT STILL. The lil dude serves as a universal remote no console ever did that I think. Nintendo is messing up and fanboys are happy. If the world quits buy video games it’ll be Nintendo and their fanboys

    2. Yeah wish I could buy one but own everything and every game and I’m not spending $500 to play Mario Kart. That’s crazy. Insane to launch a machine in the $500 builder computer range that’s not even that great with one game. The single player games like cyberpunk you can play on a Samsung tablet with the best screen in the world on GeForce now with ray tracing maxed out why the hell would anybody want to play it on this weird AF.

    3. Good on you for having low expectations. The Switch 2 in Nintendo’s least innovative console EVER. Coupled with probably the worst launch title lineup I have ever seen in ANY console. Their first party games are Mario Kart (Improved from Deluxe about as much as the Switch is to the Switch 2). And a couple remasters. And all the other games are rereleases that everyone has already played on more capable older consoles. Nintendo increased the price of their games by 33% while putting in n the lease amount of effort compared to Sony and even Microsoft. But I’m happy you are enjoying it

    1. It technically wasn’t Sony, or any current head of Playstation. But Yoshida was a HUGE part of Playstation back in the day. He was the face for years, that’s why his opinions and statements are still being attached to Sony/PlayStation to this day.

  2. Glad to hear it. And yeah £80 games are annoying but all all 3 where gonna have £80 games, nintendo just went first, xbox next and sony will follow. Most comment threads I read about switch 2 is hate, not for the switch 2 but hate that the commenters can’t afford it but pretend they can while yelling games are more expensive. Grow up and admit you hate something you can’t afford because you can’t afford instead of pretending to have some kind of high horse complex. Hate if you can afford to have one.

  3. That’s not true, if you search you will see that Nintendo Switch 2 sales are lower than Nintendo’s smallest estimations. Besides, I’m in Japan since its release and the only way you cqn get the console in Japan is through lotteries, which is stupid since you can easily find it in U.S, many stores have it stocked, while in its home country you have to be selected to buy it. But definitely the console sold more than it actually deserves with $80 games and software comparable with Steam Deck.

    1. Again… what other game is 80$??? Mario Kart Wolrd is the only 80$ game.

Do not include games + expansions or upgrade packs.

Rest of the games are 70$

And if you are in Japan, then you must be new as this is not something new to have a lotteries system. Look it up.

      1. Nintendo is such a cult!!
How dare anyone question the supremacy of the greatest company in the world!! How dare anyone have even one negative thought! Really sad! It’s just a corporation, if you want tosell your soul, plenty of religions or political organizations would be glad to take all your money

        1. You still didnt answer the question. To my knowledge there is but one game at 80$ and the others are 70$ or less. Unless you are just trying to say there will be other games to hit 80$. No problem to speculate on a future scenario. But dont say currently their games(the S at the end makes the difference) are 80$ which makes it look like all their games are. This is misinformation. I don’t need to be following a cult to point out misinformation as it happens too often. You probably saw this somewhere else anf look you’re doing it also. DK Bonanza is going to be 70$…

      2. Lol Yeah, Only Mario Kart is $80 because it’s damn near the only new game that launched with their big new console. Imagine that. The ONLY new game on this next gen $500 console is a slightly improved version of the previous game.. And that’s not crazy?

  4. Nothing is going to beat Nintendo in Japan, ESPECIALLY if its a thrash, decade old tech (Vita had an OLED screen in 2011) Nintendo handheld.

  5. Fun fact… I used to live in Denmark, where I bought the original Switch in 2017. Now I live in South Korea, and the price for Switch 2 is the same as back then in Denmark. The Switch 2 price in Denmark now, though… phew. 😀
