The recently released Mario Kart World is chockfull of playable characters with a diverse and balanced roster, however, some are wondering why some non-Mario themed characters weren’t included. Ouest-France chatted with Kosuke Yabuki, the producer of Mario Kart World, to find out why this isn’t a thing. Yabuki told the publication that he didn’t think that was the right fit for the game and that there are plenty of charters for everyone to enjoy.
“As developers, it would have seemed incongruous to add characters from other games to this universe. And it didn’t seem necessary, given everything we could already do with Mario. We inevitably wonder how players will perceive this cast. But there are so many characters and so many costumes that there’s sure to be something for everyone.”

I would’ve taken literally almost anyone else over a random dolphin or cow or bat for this roster. The fact that E. Gadd has been around almost 25 years and has STILL never been playable honestly gets under my skin; it’s getting to “A random potted plant got into Smash before Waluigi” levels of WTF-ness.

Wanted to have Kirby a racer since the Mario kart 8 Wii U dlcs, I don’t think it’s gonna happen with this and air riders coming out unfortunately, I think Nintendo should bite the bullet (bill XDXDXDXD IM SUCH A FUNNY DUDE) and put their most iconic ips in the roster
Shigeru Miyamoto recently stated that they didn’t like the idea of Nintendo Character’s Crossing over into each other’s games. I wouldn’t be surprised if he caused this. I hate how they use costumes to fill the character select screen. I hate that there are even major Mario Characters that they could have added but are still missing. I loved the Guest Characters and Courses of 8 Deluxe. Ah yes, Snow Man and Dolphin, those are definitely the characters people have always wanted. They had all this time to make Mario Kart World and they give us this. I still prefer 8 Deluxe to World. If they ended up purposely holding back characters for DLC or some road map, that kind of hurts me. I don’t like when content is held back purposely for DLC. DLC should be actual additional content that is made after the game is released. Not Content that they always planned to add but decided not to so they can release it later.
World is easily the messiest character roster that I’ve seen out of any game. There’s no reason for the costumes to clutter the roster this way when MK8D didn’t. Nintendo in general seems to be introducing messy menus and terrible UI, this is a problem in Zelda TotK and EoW too. Terrible.
Exactly. This is exactly why the costumes for the Mario characters shouldn’t clutter up the roster for Mario Kart World. They should have make room for other non Mario characters just like they did with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
All the “extra” characters like the cow, dolphin, etc could have been one single character slot, honestly.
I think Mario Kart World has plenty of playable characters, much more then i expected. Between the different playable characters and different variations of certain characters with different attires.
Well there are still some characters that are missing from the roster and a few other characters that should be added to the game DLC in the future.
Much like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I suspect Mario Kart World will have almost double the content by the end of the Switch 2’s lifecycle. I wouldn’t rule out some crossover characters and maps tbh

Yeah… the unbalanced character costumes….. How TF do the babies have more costumes than dk and Pauline….Mario Pauline and dk are the first characters that started the series. The first damsel the first villain.
They’ve had several years and Pauline even had a touring outfit in the official concept art for the game….everyone should have had an even balanced number tbh
I’m surprised people are so negative about the roster. Other than the select screen being cluttered and some underwhelming costume choices for a few characters, I kinda loved being able to play as the random ‘npc’ racers. They put so much effort into the little animations for tricks and stuff. It makes me happy when Rocky throws his wrench on top of his manhole cover. He’s so stupid I love him.
For the Mario Kart World roster, press the X button before selecting a character and it sorts all the outfits and stuff such by CHARACTER instead of them being by whatever the default order is. This cleans up the entire list. It even says on the screen to press X to sort.
The answer to every “why isn’t ______ in MK World?’ is simple. It’ll be paid DLC. I’m surprised they’re not going the “season” route like mobile games do where they dangle a carrot on a $20 stick and make players jump through a bunch of hoops to get their rewards.
