Sakurai sees AI as a potential solution for improving development efficiency as costs soar (update)

Update: it seems Game Infinitus may have mistranslated some of the comments from the Yahoo Japan interview with Masahiro Sakurai.

Prominent Nintendo game developer Masahiro Sakurai has talked at length about unsustainable game development in a recent interview with Yahoo Japan. Talking about a solution, Mr. Sakurai says that he now sees generative AI as a potential key to the video game industry’s future. With game costs rising as video games become bigger and more complex, due to both scope and visuals, he believes that AI could help alleviate some of the cost burdens. Here’s what Mr. Sakurai told Yahoo:

“Frankly speaking, the future is very unclear. I do feel that this situation cannot continue as it is,” he said. “At present, the only effective breakthrough I can think of is the utilization of generative AI.”

“We are now at a stage where we must change the development framework itself, such as by improving work efficiency through the use of generative AI. It may become an era where only companies that can successfully adapt to this change will be able to survive,” he observed.

“In the past, if someone worked in design they might move on to get experience as a planner, but now everyone is so specialized,” he explained. “It’s hard to grow a wide variety of skills.”

“At present, more than ten thousand titles are released each year, making it extremely difficult for any single game to stand out. In order to succeed in the market, great effort, luck, high quality, and distinctiveness are also required.”

Comparing the situation to that of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, he remarked, “Mr. Miyazaki performs work that only he is capable of doing. His path is not something that others can simply follow or imitate. On the contrary, what is important is to compete by forging entirely different paths.”

    1. This is a really insightful take from Sakurai! The idea of AI, like ChatGPT at GPTOnline.ai, offering solutions for development efficiency in the face of soaring costs is definitely a conversation worth having in the gaming industry. It’ll be interesting to see how this evolves and what kind of balance is struck between human creativity and AI assistance.

  1. And people are going to praise him because it’s sakurai, if it were Miyamoto people would be more than eager to hang him…

  2. Seems a little competitive with Ghibli, Studio Ghibli just celebrated their 40th anniversary. I believe that was on June 15th. And then Mario’s 40th this September. Definitely competition there.

As an artist myself I know Ai does a lot of heavy lifting on the creativity side, but even if you don’t use Ai, it can influence your creative direction. Make things more manageable, and speed up decision making, and if it saves them money, then that is good.

    1. He’s not really wrong though, AI can be very powerful and can be used for great things, it’s just that because so many people abuse it, it’s gotten a bad rap.

  3. See this is where I disagree with the people when it comes to AI. I personally am all for AI but only as an extension to our toolset and not as a complete replacement.
AI is not bad as a concept, in the right hands is can be very powerful, but the problem is it’s become the main driver of the vehicle while we are sitting in the passenger seat.

    1. That’s because human drivers keep passing up the wheel, while some don’t even care about what’s on the road.

I wouldn’t trust an AI car (with zero-intervention) near busy streets and pedestrians (and cops that can fine you to kingdom-come).

    2. I’m sick of Comments not being shown. Stop It, I made a really great comment about my thoughts on this topic and it was t shared just like on many other posts, it wasn’t rude, toxic, negative, or anything bad, why was it not shared.

  4. So much prejudice. People hear this and say, “OH NO AI SLOPP!!” without actually thinking about how generative AI is great for games like roguelikes or anything with randomly generated content. Heck, it could evolve the NPC dialogue dynamic. Imagine never having to spam talking to an NPC until they start repeating themselves. You could just talk to them until you get relevant information or whatever satisfaction and just move on.

Do you know how many fans would go absolutely nuts for an Animal Crossing where each villager was a unique chatbot you could talk to who remembers past conversations? The obsession would be downright unhealthy.

  5. He’s right tho I dont get why youre all so mad it helps cut costs and increase productivity
Same for all industries AI improves society as a whole

  6. As an avid AI HATER and Sakurai critic. You have to carefully understand what he says.
Sakurai is not endorsing generative AI. He understands that the gaming market is becoming insanely unstable right now shareholders and the mass keep asking for the next GTA 7 in term of scale and content inside a game and it’s becoming impossible for humans to keep up without the help of a metal hand. Instead of scaling down projects companies keep asking for huge large scale projects and this is not sustainable.

Infinite growth…Like everything…inside the horror of a capitalist hellscape.

    Uhhhhh…MARIO KAAAAAAAAAAART EIIIIIGHT!!!!
    sax solo

  7. Sadly, with GTA 6 success, the industry’s obsession with triple A games with horrendously absurd budgets is gonna explode. I really wish that series wasn’t nearly as succesful as it.

  8. It’s really interesting how Sakurai is thinking about AI for games! It makes sense with how big games are getting. I wonder if AI could help with making things like gible art too, so artists have more time for new ideas. It could really speed things up!

  9. “Insightful piece! Sakurai’s reminder that even the biggest game projects can become unsustainable really hits home. AI might just be a tool to ease that pressure—thanks for covering it.
