Square Enix acknowledges Expedition 33 success

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has proved to be a massive hit with gamers and critics alike and many are praising its evolutionary turn based combat. After playing the game, many users took to social media to blast Square Enix and its decision to do away with turn based combat in the successful Final Fantasy series. Now speaking to investors, Square Enix finally decided to address the success of Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and says it could possibly be used as inspiration for the future of Final Fantasy. Video Gamer has attempted to translate what Square Enix said to a share holder at the investor question and answer session:

Yuzz_ said that Square Enix’s response “was that the next three years of the medium-term plan will focus on delivering truly interesting games to users… [with] many titles, including mid-tier ones”.

Regarding the desire for Final Fantasy to return to traditional turn-based combat, Square Enix said “they are aware of Expedition 33 and consider command-based RPGs to be Square Enix’s origin and foundation”. For Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, Square Enix insisted “They value the command-based RPG genre and plan to continue delivering games in this style in the future”. For fans disappointed by FF16, this is fantastic news as it means Square Enix intend to return the series to the command-based formula it made popular.

  1. When you think that the producer of that filthy Final Devil May Cry Fantasy 16 declared upon its release that no one was interested in turn-based games anymore…

  2. I think that turn based games have a time and place and it doesn’t always fit into every game, but when you take a franchise known for its tb combat and make it more of an action rpg, there is gonna be backlash.

    1. You do know the exposition 33 is absolutely riddled with parry and block… Action-based mechanics right?

      1. Riddled makes it sound like a bad thing? I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Expedition 33 and its TB playstyle. Final Fantasy has been, for the majority of uts games, a turn-based franchise and they have lost consumer’s interest in recent years due to them deviating from the turn-based combat ppl know and enjoy

  3. what makes expedition 33s turn based combat so satisfying is the timing on dodges parrys etc but the funny thing is sony did it first in legend of dragoon for ps1 in 1999

  4. I wish they bloody wouldn’t.
I guess I can kiss goodbye to being able to play any Final Fantasy games in the future now.
