Mario Kart World online update sparks backlash with subreddit now banning posts

Many of us enjoy a three lap race online in Mario Kart World however that option was practically taken away with the recent update to the game. Previously if you wanted a three lap course race you would select Random when given the choice of courses. When you select Random now you might be given an intermission course where the majority of laps are driving from one track to another. This has caused so much negative discussion on the Mario Kart World subreddit that the mods have banned posts on the change leading to more online anger. Instead there’s now a sticky post where you can talk about the changes, but good luck creating a new post about it.

I don’t understand why people don’t like this change and not because I refuse to understand or am being a dbag about it, I’m actually curious and how it’s “ruined” Mario Kart.

    1. It’s just people wanting to complain about something that’s successful because that fact hurts their pride after they tried so hard to get “drop the price” going and failed, they got smart and bought the cheapest console of the current gen with a $50 game and feel bad they were weak/hypocritical, and now need to justify all their actions by continuing to find “faults”.

      1. Or… maybe some people just want to play the game how it’s been played for three decades when there hasn’t been a new installment for 12 years. I don’t know what’s so difficult to understand about this.

              1. I know your intentions are good, sonicgalaxy, but it appears you might have overinflated ‘milk money.’ It’s typically reserved for those tiny sums, the very definition of chump change, not millions in development.

    2. Apparently it’s because you don’t race 3 laps on a course, but you race to the course itself and make one lap on the course. And this is bad because of reasons. 🤷‍♂️
Funny enough, first they make you believe no one is playing standard course races, because everyone is playing K.O. Tour, but now all if a sudden, MKW is “dead”, because Nintendo changed something.

    3. The reason is people don’t want to do these intermission tracks as its very boring and you only do one lap of the track that was selected, thats why everyone picked random to guarantee a 3 lap track, however the update changed that. People want to race on the track, not in a long highway.

      1. How did people manage to play Mario Kart 8, since there were mayn course with relatively long straights and (at best) moderate turns?

        1. Is this a serious question? Because there were 3 tracks that preceded them that allowed for 3 laps. The tracks you reference were always the last track in a Grand Prix Cup. You should know this as a player of Mario Kart 8.

    4. It’s because Mario Kart purists would rather race for 3 laps on the same course rather than travel from one destination to another.

They could have made these intermissions more interesting but instead you have 8 lane wide motorways with gentle curves (think Forza Horizon but with Outrun wide roads and turns).

At the very least Nintendo should have offered players a choice of modes but instead this is a take it or leave it offer, so most are now leaving it and review bombing.

    5. “Eeeeeermmmm i don’t le get it. Why do people don’t want to be forced to play straight lines instead of actually well designed courses???????”

      Dude, cmoooon.

  2. Haha. I left a comment saying this was a bad look for banning posts. It would have been better just letting the comments/posts die out on their own.

    1. agreed, i could understand if this were action were taken a few months down the line potentially but why censor the folks playing the game? just leads to those who don’t have the game chiming in with their irrelevant thoughts

    2. The subreddit isn’t banning posts to suppress dissent. They’re trying to limit discussion to a single megathread, lest the complaining overrun the whole board.

      1. That’s silly because there being a lot of negative posts doesn’t stop anyone else from posting something else. That would be like suggesting there be only one thread for positive posts so they don’t overrun the whole board.

Clearly, it’s a moderator who doesn’t like seeing complaints about the game and is putting up an obstacle for users to do so… which is a TERRIBLE look.

    3. I’m against censorship no matter how problematic the contents are, so leave it up. (Unless it’s CP of actual kids, that is.) If real accounts are used, even better because now you’ll know who the scumbags are if the post/reply/comment is bigoted as hell. Silencing bad people just makes them slink back into the dark, so let them stay in the light for all to see.

              1. Fair enough. But what difference does ot really make, if you race to the curse and make 1 lap on it, or if you make just make 3 laps on it. 🤔

              1. Yes, it would’ve been a good thing to make it its own separate mode. Nintendo knew fans were choosing random to play a certain way, and the tracks are already available as tracks.

You know, it’s ironic that you are calling people who want it as an option snobs. All they’re doing is wanting it as a mode, and they’re not saying the routes should be done away with. You however, you’re saying people should be silent about their frustrations with an option being taken away for no good reason. You’re being the very thing you’re accusing others of being, a snob, and a pompous one at that.

                1. Also, I’ll ask here again: What difference does it really make, if you race 3 laps on a course or if you race to the course itself and make 1 lap on it? ESPECIALLY if you (rightfully so) can’t choose the course anyway.

                  1. I already replied to you on the other post, but I enjoy a track’s aesthetic, and I don’t really get to enjoy it much if it’s only a single lap. For what it’s worth, I like the transitions that the routes have when going from track to track, but I don’t really get the full feel until I am at the actual track. It wouldn’t really be bad at all if they allowed 3 laps once when you get there instead of a short breeze.

  3. Reddit is probably the most cliquey social media site but I don’t envy mods’ responsibility to keeping things organized and readable.

    1. Snob: “a person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to those of other people”. Aren’t you fitting that description when you say people are being whiney just for wanting a simple mode to be added?

  4. Freedom of Speech should never be taken away under most circumstances. Also The Copium from some of you literally bring me pain from how far you’ll go to always be on Nintendo’s side. I’m a huge Nintendo fan. I also live in reality. I always see so many of you saying People are complaining on purpose because they hate Nintendo and want to see them fail. Many who complain are actually people who love and care about Nintendo the Most. Many of you refuse to see reality, I’m not trying to be mean but sometimes the things people are complaining about is so clear but you all act clueless and pretend it’s hate? “Joycon Drift, never new them, doesn’t exist, stop speaking up about it”

    1. There’s a difference between an Nintendo fan and a drone. Fans like to play the games and voice what they like and don’t like about games. Drones treat the games as some holy grail, and say people who have any issues with a game have an ulterior motive of some sorts. Drones aren’t mentally sound.

      1. This has been an issue since Nintendo was created probably, obviously nintendo is not the only company or media in general to have this type of people, but it’s insane how many people behave like this for Nintendo, to the point that I have met many people in real life who acts like this (tbh even Sony fans) and you know this is a blog only dedicated to Nintendo so I always expected that this place had people like this.

        1. Admittedly, I used to be that type of person. I think I realized how silly it was when I started voicing a complaint about something and people were being ridiculous in their responses to me. I think it was ORAS and the Battle Frontier. Still can’t believe people defended it by saying “it’s a Ruby Sapphire remake, not an Emerald remake”.

          1. Cmon we all been like that, kids like useless debates like console wars and stuff, myself included, you know how tough was growing up having a Wii U while all the COOL kids had a MANLY AND ADULT ps4? it’s bad when you don’t grow out of that phase not only because the company will literally do everything they want and you will submit to said demands but you will also miss out on many experiences, think ridge racer type 4 and half life 2 are in my top 5 favorite games of all time.

            1. The Wii U was what made me get a PlayStation, lol. The droughts were just too much during that generation. Honestly I wish I would’ve done it sooner too, there were so many games I didn’t realize that I was missing out on, and I haven’t felt the pains of a drought since between playing on a Switch and PlayStation.

            2. “you know how tough was growing up having a Wii U while all the COOL kids had a MANLY AND ADULT ps4?” So sorry for your hardship, hope you recover one day.

              1. It ended with my Sony fanboy friends growing up out of that console war bullcrap and having a blast with smash 4 and Mario kart 8 at my house, also black ops 2 on Wii U was like the superior way to play cod locally like 2 PLAYERS WITH NO SPLITSCREEN?! man I miss black ops 2.

  5. I don’t care about that. But I would really like to have some more versus options like shine thief back and some more racing tracks for battling. They only give us eight throughout the whole Mario kart 8 series and it wasn’t enough and now Mario kart world has really dropped the ball with the couch cooperative versus games

    1. Yes but some of their features that was present in past Mario Kart games, are no longer a option for us right now but I’m optimistic that could change and resolved the issue at a later date. Nintendo developers are really sinking in their time and money for the game’s update that we are not happy about and people now saying they are becoming the new Disney.

  6. I Pay 100eur for game if its nessesary but why build quality of console and cardridges is soo poor soft plastik? Gime better console and i Pay more!

  7. Seeing all these comments about how people should stop criticizing and are “whiny fanboys” are so miserable.
People have these things called “preferences”, in this case some people like the new way with intermission tracks while others prefer the old way of a 3-lap course.
People paid for the game, they should be allowed to play the way they want. Some people don’t like the new intermission courses, which is fine, and some do, which is also fine. That’s why “options” are such an important function in video games.
When you force players to play a certain way; You risk alienating people that don’t like it that way. And considering it’s the people that purchased the games that got Mario Kart to where it is, it does very much feel disrespectful from Nintendo to throw the long-time supporters under the bus just because they don’t like your forced gimmick.

  8. I get that the change to online was the wrong call on Nintendo’s part, but that is just one part of the game and all these people going crazy, review bombing, and saying this ruined Mario Kart World are a bunch of whiny babies. The game is still amazing and people shouldn’t be letting one bad update ruin the entire game for them. If you are one of these people then be thankful that the chance of getting a classic 3 lap race is still possible because nintendo can take that away any time.

    1. Telling people they gotta be happy after they were playing a certain way and it was taken away from them for a pretentious reason is a wild take. Have you ever considered that not everyone likes playing the routes between tracks? It’s fine if you like them, but you’re basically telling people to be happy about being shat on. You’re the worst part of the fanbase, a drone.

  9. r/mariokartworld is apparently run by Nazis who love driving in straight lines and hate free speech. At least there is still r/mariokart for open discourse.

  10. Not people defending Mario Kart World again… This comment section is depressing. This game deserves every bit of scrutiny it gets.

  11. “This has caused so much negative discussion on the Mario Kart World subreddit that the mods have banned posts on the change leading to more online anger. Instead there’s now a sticky post where you can talk about the changes, but good luck creating a new post about it.”

This makes it sound so much worse than it is. It’s very common for mods to try to prevent their subreddits from being flooded and make a single megathread for people to post their thoughts in. As long as they aren’t completely preventing people from posting their displeasure then there should be no issue.

  12. Let’s be real here, anybody who bought a switch 2 bought it for Mario kart, no way around it. That’s like 500 dollars. From what I can tell by the reviews Mario kart world is an amazing game with many flaws, so people not only are bothered by said flaws but they can tell that behind the flaws there is a game worth playing for AGES (cause let’s be real we played Mario kart 8 for 10 years at this point). I endorse the people who put fair criticism to the game and want things to change. We SHOULD ask more ESPECIALLY for an 80 dollar game.

  13. I don’t get the reddit complaint. They didn’t ban discussion but instead made a megathread because there are karma farmers that will generate threads simply for the upvotes because they know they’ll get a bunch. It’s a common reddit mod practice to make a megathread so the sub can discuss other things and not be flooded with redundant threads and karma farmers.

As for the change, I’ve played the game a lot since launch including a few hours yesterday online… it was getting pretty bad there for a while that the majority were picking random courses, but last night almost no one was picking random. The connecting courses aren’t all straight roads. I don’t get that complaint, though I wonder just how many complaining actually own the game and how many are simply the type that love a good controversy to jump on?

Whatever the case, the change only adds the connecting routes from the previous race as an option. They don’t include all connecting routes in the pool with the regular courses. So, it’s not that big of a deal unless you only want 3 lap boring races on the same track and don’t want a variety and the community is voting more for connecting races. Which, go set up a private lobby and invite your friends in and play however you want.

  14. I just want to play Mario Kart and enjoy the chaos that ensues from doing so. I have unlocked all the karts and mirror mode. I have close to 130 racers unlocked with all the alternate costumes for certain racers. At this point, I just want to enjoy playing with others. As for DLC plans, I would like to see more courses and a 200CC difficulty. I found 150CC was still too easy.
