US: June 2025 Nintendo Switch 2 was the No.1 console, Mario Kart World No.3

US video game hardware and software sales tracker Circana has said that the Nintendo Switch 2 is now the fastest-selling video game console in history. The console was the best-selling video game hardware in June 2025 with the PlayStation 5 pushed to second and Xbox Series X|S to third. Mario Kart World was the third best-selling video game for the month of June with Elden Ring Nightreign at No.1 in the software charts.

“What the launch sales of Switch 2 primarily tell us is that they made a lot of Switch 2 to sell at launch. Lifetime sales and launch sales of a console often do not correlate, meaning that some consoles with small launches ended up doing incredibly well lifetime (PS2 only sold 400k in its launch month) while others with big launches ended up not doing as well lifetime. Since launch month demand is rarely satiated by available supply (and it is certainly not a great sign when it is, historically) all we can really get a read on at launch is the confidence of the manufacturer to make so many units available, and the ability of the supply chain to get those units into the market. But having the biggest launch month sales for any new video game hardware platform is a helluva good start.”

  1. Hot take: The PS2 wasn’t in 160 million homes, if anything it was only in half of those, I would argue even 1/4. People just kept re buying them because they were cheap and broke often. Add in the revisions as well. Look at the attachment rate for a console that sold that much, it was horrible.

      1. No, I would argue, that almost everyone replaced their PS2 at least twice and upgraded to the slim at least once. And it sounds ridiculous until you realize that the ps2s best selling game sold way less than 20 million copies. Everything after GTA sold far less.

          1. Now? Not now. It’s literally what I started my whole comment with 😂 from the beginning I said that I’d argue that.

On the fact that the dvd drive was terrible. That there’s 1000s upon 1000s of threads online of people asking for the most reliable PS2 and citing the drive/laser as the problem. And again, as I said the fact that the best selling PS2 game was GTA:SA, and even that only sold 17 million units. Compare to the 160, that adoption rate is FkN anemic. Everything after the GTA tripplets sold abysmal for a console that sold 160 million units.

  2. Fair warning about these numbers: Despite what they say, these often DO NOT count digital numbers for Nintendo consoles. That’s why there’s an asterisk next to Mario Kart World. I cannot fathom why they say it includes eShop numbers when it actually doesn’t (Minecraft doesn’t include eShop sales either). IMO it’s kind of pointless to make rankings like this without the full picture.

    1. Would it count sales from the Mario Kart World bundle do you think? As that is surely the most common way people have got this game.

        1. I wouldn’t be so sure with these numbers in particular. This ranking system is based how much money is spent on each game, not how many copies were sold (which is what you’re talking about with wii sports). I’m not really sure if Circana considers bundles as part of these numbers.

        2. Ignore my previous comment. I just looked into it further. Circana DIRECTLY says that these numbers do NOT include bundles either. So yes, Mario Kart World, physical only, no bundle, sold this well. IMO it’s probably top if you consider digital and the bundle. Unfortunately Circana’s numbers are simply not that great when it comes to stuff like this.

      1. I just checked, Circana’s numbers do NOT include the bundle. So yes, this “ranking” is only including physical copies of Mario Kart World. No bundle. No digital sales.
