Metroid Prime series producer Kensuke Tanabe has revealed in the new Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective artbook that he would like to have more people experience the multiplayer mode they shipped with the GameCube classic, Metroid Prime 2. Tanabe says the developers put their heart and soul into developing the multiplayer and it wasn’t a last minute addition.
“Retro finished the multiplayer mode without compromising on quality even under such challenging conditions,” he wrote. “Being of its time, it was designed for local play, so the number of players who actually experienced it might not have been very large. If it is remade, I’d be delighted for more people to have the chance to experience it.”
“After finishing Metroid Prime, Nintendo directed Retro Studios to complete the next project in as short a time as possible.”
“Initially, there was a proposal to develop a multiplayer-focused Metroid Prime ‘1.5’ (and ultimately, multiplayer was realised in Metroid Prime 2). However, Retro expressed a desire to create a robust, standalone sequel in Metroid Prime 2.”

Well, if that’s the case then maybe a multiplayer mode has been added to prime 4, so long as it’s not like road rash
A Road Rash-esque could be a unlockable mini multiplayer game so long as it doesn’t steal from the quality of a standard multiplayer experience.
Perfect time to put it on Nintendo Classics lol.
Though, to be honest, it might be better to just remake 2 and 3
Why doesn’t he just stick it on NSO then, and update it so players can battle world wide, why make a song and dance about it, doesn’t he realise we have Gamecube NSO now?
“just stick it on NSO”
It is never that simple. I imagine Nintendo wants to do quite a bit of playtesting for each NSO release, especially for something like Prime 2 since their GameCube emulator isn’t great.
Prime 2 felt like an afterthought, and i think i read somewhere it basically was… but had potential, and then… on Metroid Prime 3 the multiplayer was absent. Metroid Hunters for the DS was an incredible online shooter on that system.
After the Prime games were made, Nintendo have been sitting on what should be the natural Online shooter franchise from the company… but is weird it never took off. If i were NOA, i would be putting pressure to Japan offices to make it happen
They have Splatoon, there’s no need to waste money on a Metriod online shooter that wouldn’t sell even half as well.
Yeah, it’s a shame more people aren’t into the prime games as much especially in Japan where it’s not so popular, they’d rather play Pokemon believe it or not!
FPS games have never been popular in Japan, you know…
As for a Metroid shooter, I say meh… There was Federation Force on the 3DS, which I found fairly mediocre.
Federation force was the worst Metroid game ever, maybe if Nintendo poured more attention into the prime games there would be a bigger audience today, but anyway we’ve got prime 4 coming so hopefully it’ll be an absolute blast
I think Prime 2 would actually benefit from a remaster. I got too lost and confused in the other dimension, it all looks the same covered in ooze and was hard for me to navigate. Plus the energy drain of it all, I don’t think I ever finished it, which is wild since Prime is an all timer for me.
You actually read wrong then! Originally they were going to make a multiplayer focused game but Nintendo did not give them much time and wanted single player, so they had limited resources to focus on what they originally wanted to do and little time to do it!
Metroid Prime 2 was the best. Needs a full remaster treatment like Prime 1 got.
I totally agree we need it badly and id look forward to it
Nintendo fans like to hate on the genre but Prime should have Online PVP though I’d hate for it to become like other FPS Games where they focus more on PVP than the Single Player Campaign.
Real gamers hate PvP, it’s a garbage mode for low IQ short attention spanned individuals. Only causal hobbyists and twitch streamers/influencers play PvP. Gamers want a GAME, casuals want a mode, huge difference.
100% agree. The only gamers worse than causal hobbyists are the effectists.
And don’t even get me started on them…
It would be amazing to have metroid prime 2 remastered doubt it would ever see the light of day of any dlc but may be interesting but hard who knows but its a idea to create dlc of some sort and so I guess the closed thing to seeing metroid prime dlc is in my dreams and in remastered copy of the game but thats good enough for me at least so ill enjoy that at least love metroid prime 1,2 3rd could have done better but it happens but in this order I love the metroid prime seris 2,1,3 hope everyone peace and happiness cause everyone deserves good days
Hoping we get Prime 2 remastered in the next year. The game was more punishing that Prime, but is still a great experience. Just replayed it a year ago.
Fans dont wanto to wait another 20 years for Metroid Prime 5 and have to buy a $1000 Switch 9 to play it.
In 20 years I doubt a console would be 1k. Right now the Switch 2 at $450 is the cheapest on the market, and consoles have been fairly standard in pricing since the HD boom, which started 20 years ago. To suggest they’d go up 100% in another 20 years when they were regularly $249 – $299 prior to HD is ludicrous.
