Nintendo president admits Switch 2 game development takes longer than the original

Video game development times are taking longer than they have in the past which is affecting both Sony and Microsoft. Now Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has informed investors that the development time for Nintendo Switch 2 games is longer than they had been on the original Nintendo Switch. This is mainly due to the complexity of games these days along with the graphical fidelity that’s now offered by the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2. To combat this he says he hopes that fans can tide themselves over with original Nintendo Switch games until the next big release hits.

“Software development costs are higher and development periods are longer, making it more challenging to continue introducing new titles at a good pace.

Nintendo Switch 2 can also play compatible Nintendo Switch software, so we would like to recommend Nintendo Switch software as well to consumers who are picking up a game console for the first time. With these considerations in mind, we believe we will be able to maintain the momentum of our Nintendo Switch 2 business by striking a good balance between introducing new titles and encouraging consumers to play evergreen titles over a long period of time.”

  1. If only it wasn’t like this. I recently watched a Mario Kart Rainbow Road evolution video, and I was thinking about how Nintendo handled the DS lineup. It was a very unique game system, yet it still achieved decent graphics for its time. It didn’t rival the Wii or GameCube in terms of graphics of course, but they made some pretty great games in the DS lineup with cheap games. I struggle to see Nintendo take that same path again, now that they have NVidia on their side.

  2. It’s not that much harder. Nintendo only has around 8000 employees and that’s absolutely everyone. I get they avoid getting too big and that is probably wise, but they can afford to take on about 1-2 thousand people more and that can keep them on track.

  3. So will Astra Bot 2 come to PS5 or do you have to fork over nearly 1k to play it on PS6? Oh I hear GTA6 is post poned to November 2026. So basically you have to pay nearly 1K to play it on PS6 to get the best version now.

    1. For starters, this has been a topic every journalist seems to write about as if it’s the end of the world since the Xbox 360 launched, calm yourself. Secondly, the best version of GTA6 is the one that never gets played. Why you’re worried about R* trash is beyond me, only casuals and hoodrats bother themselves with R* trash

  4. What do you expect? Game development takes longer like 4 to 5 years in the making to bring true quality and experience to gamers. This is not a easy challenge for 3 companies.

  5. Just about every major project for the Switch 2 (Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hyrule Warriors 3, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Metroid Prime 4) began life as a Switch 1 project. That having been said, I can’t wait to see what Nintendo cooks up that has been built for the Switch 2 from the ground up.

    1. People say that as if it’s an insult when the reality is….. DUH! The Switch 2 came out in June and we already have all these amazing games plus Metroid to finish out the year, of course they started development as *Switch titles, but they knew what they were pushing with Switch 2 and could easily develop outside of the *Switch constraints. Twilight Princess started as a GameCube title, BotW started as a Wii U title, Uncharted Drake’s Fortune started as a PS2 title, virtually every launch era title starts development on the old platform in some way before being moved to a dev kit or proper hardware, otherwise these games wouldn’t have started development until closer to launch and been out 2 or 3 years after launch.

Finally, the asterisk is because there’s no such thing as a Switch 1, so I had to correct you. If you don’t know the difference between Switch and Switch 2 without adding words to be more confusing, I don’t know what to tell you but life must be hard to always look at someone in conversation and stop them to say, “do you mean ____ 1? Or 2?” If they meant 2, they would say 2 because it’s in the title.

  6. I don’t like this because I don’t want to buy future Nintendo anes and have it he like current PlayStation and Xbox where you buy a new console that is extremely expensive just to get only a few 1st party games. They raised the prices of the games and even if they didn’t, they have the money to hire more developers. Maybe this is why Nintendo mentioned maybe seeking out new studios to buy. I dont want to spend half a thousand dollars or more on a console, for there to only be a few major 1st party games on it.

    1. That’s pretty much how it’s always been, and that’s the only reason to buy a console, for the 1st party exclusives otherwise you would just buy a PC. As for Xbox, they haven’t had an exclusive since 2015 and went 3rd party in 2017, and Sony has been consistent since PS4 with ensuring their platforms, like Nintendo, are the place to play. For what you’re getting with the price, you have a wealth of content. If YOU can’t find more than a handful of games to play, then YOU need a different hobby. I find more than a handful every year to justify and am never left without.

  7. Nintendo could help us “tide ourselves over” by patching Switch 1 games to run at 1080p handheld and 4K docked. That alone would remove the obstacle of the games actually looking worse on Switch 2 because of rough upscaling.
