IGN reveals their top Nintendo games of all-time

IGN has been running an extensive feature taking a look at their favourite Nintendo video games of all-time. There’s some extremely solid picks on the list with the critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at No.1 and it’s followed by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There aren’t a lot of surprises on the list, but it’s good to see the content-packed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe included.

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  3. Super Mario World
  4. Super Mario: Odyssey
  5. Tetris
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  7. Chrono Trigger
  8. Super Metroid
  9. The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past
  10. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
  11. Super Smash Bros: Ultimate
  12. Super Mario Bros. 3
  13. Metroid Prime
  14. Super Mario: Galaxy 2
  15. Pokémon: HeartGold  Pokémon: SoulSilver

  1. Oh, no way. BotW was and is still better than TotK. Sure, TotK is much bigger and has a lot more to do than BotW and has more enemy and dungeon variety, but the runes (Ultrahand, Ascend, etc.) don’t feel like Zelda gameplay whereas the runes in BotW (stasis, magnesis, etc.) still felt like tools you’d find in a Zelda title. Both games are phenomenal, but neither deserve to be at the top. I still think Majora’s Mask (N64, not the 3DS DE-make) is the best Zelda.

F-Zero GX will still always be at the top of any Nintendo game list I make.

      1. Totk at number 1 is a bit goofy. Botw is a more focused and better game imo. Totk is fine but also felt somewhat uninspired. Reusing the surface world was and always will be a big mistake. Didn’t feel like an entirely new game.

        1. Let’s be honest, there is no way to create a list like this and not have a bunch of people hating. It’s not how my list would be, but then my list is not what your list would be either.

Having TotK and BotW as 1 and 2 which I see a lot of moaning about seems very ideologically consistent to me, so definitely no problem with that. I’ve never known anyone to love TotK and not love BotW (the other way around sure but not this way). Actually, if there’s anyone reading this who does love TotK but not BotW, speak up, that sounds like a really interesting opinion to have!

      1. (suggestion: this Biblical verse: “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” – Ephesians 4:29, New Living Translation version)

    1. Same here! F-Zero GX is top tier. I wish they had given it the remastered treatment instead of dumping it in the NSO.

  2. Only one that sticks out a bit to me is Chrono Trigger. It’s a fantastic RPG and the story was pretty groundbreaking for the time but there have been so many RPG’s that have done things much better since. If it was me I’d has swapped it out for Xenoblade 3 but it’s their list so up to them

  3. Eternal Darkness at #100. Donkey Kong Country 2 basically (way) bellow all other DK games. 😆😆😆 Seems like we habe to include some rage bait pretty much everywhere.

  4. OH MY GOD, putting both Botw and tears of the kingdom at the top is so stupid. I get it great games but damn, BOTH OF THEM? It’s not like they are completely different games from one and another

  5. Tetris and Chrono Trigger aren’t Nintendo games, they are 3rd party titles that happen to be on Nintendo platforms. That’s kinda like making a list of top 15 PlayStation games but adding Halo and Gears of War to the list.

  6. So, best Nintendo games plus a game by Alexey Pajitnov, and one by Squaresoft because reasons? Okay.
#1 and #2 are a take that could have been backed away from with only a little restraint.
Everything else looks like it’s tracking with aggregate review scores. Yay top lists, I guess.

  7. I really enjoyed BOTW and TOTK, but I would never play them back to back. I can’t help but shake the feeling that:
    1. Breath of the Wild being considered “better” than Ocarina in terms of impact was partly media hype.
    2. Tears of the King logically has to be included because it was objectively better than its predecessor.

So it’s really a bit of a two-step fallacy. At least IGN have stopped pretending like Skyward Sword is one of the greatest games of all time, so maybe they really do mean it this time. Seems unlikely. BOTW and TOTK are great games, but they do cut some corners to make way for the open world (especially BOTW), and there are more impressive open world games out there like Elden Ring and MGSV. But again, just my opinion.
