Yacht Club Games has been working on Shovel Knight 3D for 5 years on and off

Yacht Club Games has revealed in a new piece on Bloomberg that they have been working on and off on the long-awaited Shovel Knight 3D for five years. The company split into two separate teams in 2020 and one of the teams was tasked with bringing Shovel Knight into the 3D realm. However, since 2024 development on Shovel Knight 3D was paused to focus on Mina the Hollower and will shift back in 2026 to focus on Shovel Knight 3D.

  • At the beginning of 2020, Yacht Club split into two teams
  • A team lead by Sean Velasco and the other founders started work on Shovel Knight 3D
  • Eventually, leadership ended up splitting time between Shovel Knight 3D and Mina the Hollower
  • In 2024, development on Shovel Knight 3D was paused to focus on Mina the Hollower
  • The plan in 2026 is to shift focus back to Shovel Knight 3D and combine the two teams into one

  1. Uhh, maybe I missed something before, but isn’t this the first time they’re officially confirming that the next Shovel Knight is a 3D game? Last I heard they teased the next installment was in development but didn’t say explicitly state it was 3D; they said something about bringing the series to a new dimension.

Did they already announce Shovel Knight 3D before this, or am I missing something?

    1. It technically wasn’t an announcement, but Yacht Club tweeted last year that they “were taking shovel knight into a new dimension” on their new game.

The Internet just assumed they ment 3D

  2. Is Shovel Knight an interesting enough character to warrant a new sequel? I don’t know if that IP can make the same splash outside of it’s biggest fans

  3. Is this why Mina the Hollower is on an apparently-indefinite hiatus? Game was supposed to come out on Halloween but is now delayed without another release date (in fact on SW2 it says it’ll release in 2030- um, excuse me?).
