Nintendo comments on Walmart leak

logo for us retail chain walmart

Nintendo has said that the image which was used by Walmart and showed Metroid Prime 2 Echoes and Pikmin 2 as part of the Nintendo Classics GameCube range was incorrect, stating that those games “are not planned for release at this time.” It’s unclear when they are planned for release, but as always we will be certain to let you know.

“We recently provided a retailer with an image of Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles that incorrectly included games that are not planned for release at this time. The image has been removed, and we apologize for any confusion.”

Thanks to Greatsong1 for sending in the news tip!

  1. “at this time”

That doesn’t rule out being added any time in the future. With Prime 2 never seeing a re-release aside from the Prime Trilogy (which isn’t actively being sold by Nintendo physically or via digital), I’d at least expect that to hit NSO eventually.

  2. So basically they provided the image too early and had to recall it because it interfered with their release schedule plans lol. If the source was Nintendo it’s not like someone at Walmart grabbed a photoshop from Google images on accident

These are about as confirmed as it can get but whether they’re coming as part of that February Direct or later than that we can’t really say haha

  3. Maybe they let it leak to see the reaction. Maybe they saw how upset some were that Metroid Prime 2 Echoes would not get a dedicated remaster and have adjusted. Maybe, but remember that Metroid Prime 3 Corruption was never on the GameCube.

      1. Doubtful, the game is good regardless. You’d have to be pretty daft to think what you said is true in any capacity

  4. Why does Walmart even need Nintendo Switch Online promotional material? That’s something you purchase via the eShop. I guess they might make some money off of peripheral sales or eShop gift cards if there’s even any margin for profit. If there is a direct correlation between promoting NSO and console/accessories/gift card sales, then I guess that would be warranted, but I would guess no one goes to Walmart and decides to buy a NSO subscription because they saw a few GameCube games on a promotional poster or in an ad. Just my opinion.

    1. There’s a lot of shelf space now for digital download cards in Wal-mart, including NSO memberships that include the Expansion Pack.

And this is just me speculating here, but I bet it also indirectly advertises the Switch 2 showing that it plays Gamecube games via NSO

    1. That is not true for every situation. Just look at what became of Concord after their terrible PR campaign. I’m not even saying Concord was bad, but the negative reception of its PR directly impacted how little people wanted to purchase it

      1. I think it would’ve done a lot better if it released on Playstation and Xbox. It seemed like a good console shooter and there was more enthusiasm on PS5 than Steam. It was the first game in a long time that scratched my FPS itch, but it was exclusive to PS5 and PC so I missed out.

PC FPS players are incredibly vocal and have very specific sensibilities, so if something strays from their sensibilities, all you hear is how bad it is.

It’s similar with Highguard, I keep hearing hate on it and how it’s Concord allover again, but when I visited Pure Xbox last night, I saw they really love it there.

(note: I sold my Series X last year after losing faith in everything Microslop has done since 2021)
