Miyamoto concedes that there’s only so many people to reach through consoles

Nintendo have made it clear in recent years that they want to expand their franchises through different mediums, not just through consoles, so as a result we have had theme parks and movies. All of these concepts are to get people familiar with Nintendo brands and to strengthen them. Legendary video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has explained Nintendo’s approach to to broadening its reach in a recent interview. Here’s what he said:

Mr. Miyamoto, a lot of people will now start to experience or be exposed to Mario through the movies before they play the video games. I’m wondering how that impacts your way of thinking in developing games at Nintendo and if it influences your work in any way.

Miyamoto: When we’re talking about Mario as a character, he’s always evolved alongside the evolution of digital media. As we approach Mario and developing Mario games, I start to feel like there’s only so many people that we can reach through Nintendo’s systems and consoles. And so now with things like digital streaming and the expanse and the reach of what the technology allows now, I feel like that’s a great way to get Mario involved too, and really be able to evolve alongside with digital media.

So going from being able to have a touchpoint with Nintendo only through Nintendo consoles, we want to expand. We’ve been able to expand it so that they can have a touchpoint with Nintendo characters through various media. In that way, instead of people thinking, “What kind of game is Nintendo going to come up with now?” I would love for them to think about, “What kind of world Nintendo will expand on now.”

That’s the kind of approach and thinking I have currently.

  1. Especially since almost Every Single Companie and Corporation is now ran and Fueled almost Entirely and Completely by Unfathomable, Unrealistic, Corrupted, and Unlawful amounts of Greed that is making everything, especially gaming worse. But too many are not only fine with that but defend it. Thanks for making things worse 👍

      1. You live in a ignorant and fictional reality because greed is destroying gaming and much more. Unlike you, I pay attention to the world around me and what is happening in it. Boot Licker👌

        1. Yeah, if you don’t think the gaming landscape along with other landscapes haven’t been getting worse you really are just a blind loyalists, ignorant to what is happening in the world, or haven’t been alive long enough to notice.

        2. Listen pal it’s board warriors who are talk and no balls are bad if not worse than those greedy companies you claim to hate

        3. You don’t pay attention you sit at your computer throwing a hissy fit instead of actually doing something which makes you worse.

          1. Somebody is triggered. Three replies, only autistic leveled insults, false accusations, and you can’t spell. You my friend are definitely not a “Real Gamer”, though I guarantee you could use a shower or three.

            1. Lol, Mic called you the keyboard warrior even though they are the one that got triggered and left multiple replies lie a true neckbeard cringe lord.

People like Mic really actually do trigger me, because when people speak the truth, people like Mic reply with things like fake Nintendo fan among other poorly thought out insults, and try to insult and attack others for having a different view point or again in some cases just speaking the truth. They don’t realize how cringe, pathetic, and humiliating they look while also being a total hypocrite. Criticizing and calling out a Company is not the same as hating said company by the way, most who share actual criticisms on this site in my opinion are the ones that actually care about Nintendo and the Gaming landscape the most because they speak up but then get attacked by people like Mic. Its why franchises like Pokemon are destroyed now and before you reply with Pokemon sells this much, there are lot of things that are bad but still sell because people like Mic let Companies use and abuse them and defend it all.

            2. Also miscounted, Mic left four triggered replies as of this message, didn’t realize somebody else triggered them as well. I’d call them a clown but that would be a compliment,

              1. Mic sadly self destructed in this comment section. That’s what happens when you defend everything too much.

                1. Be quiet Pedo you’re nothing but some 40 year old basement dwelling loser that has nothing else to live for.

  2. People don’t have to be involved with the franchise because of its games and lore. They just wanted people to experience the franchise on TV like comics or animation for sort. They want to expand their reach.

    1. Yeah then ruin the fanbase. Also they don’t make money on the movies box office or get a smaller cut if it. This stinks of corporate greed. Sad to see Nintendo sold out. All companies are doing it especially gaming they want to get into movies while movies are dying weirdly enough it’s a boomer way of thinking.

      1. Are you dense? Licencing and royalties are there for a reason. And that licencing tail is extremely long. What Hollywood has done with royalties is far better than the greediness that gaming companies have as of now.

Look at a lot of old actors still making money from old films. Do you think Troy Baker is still making money from Tales of Vesperia? Bioshock? The Last of Us? No, he gets a flat rate and he’s one of the biggest names in gaming.

Movies aren’t dying, they’re just not making as much money in the box office as they were pre-pandemic. Which makes sense considering streaming services started popping up then. You would be extremely foolish not to see that. Look at the increase I’m revenue Disney, Paramount, HBO, Netflix, ect.

Example. Disney plus made 2.8 billion in its first year, and ever since then their revenue has been increasing by about 2 Billion each year. Keeping movies exclusive to the platform and bringing over movies from theaters within months and weeks at times has done nothing but increase their bottom dollar.

    1. No that’s not the case. Many people will not play video games and will only watch something that’s just how it is. Also they don’t make the box office I assume it’s a down payment for rights then the studio makes the money on the movie.

Most parents aren’t going to spend seventy and eighty dollars per game for their children plus all the extra additional costs, accessories, online, overpriced DLC, Pokemon charging separately for subscription services.

    1. After Sony did what they did I doubt it. But that’s actually a good remark it might make Miyamoto walk back his sentence. Thinking more it sounds like something Xbox staff would say.

  3. penguinz0 called out the movie for being awful I hope he calls Miyamoto out for being a sellout. Boycott Nintendo they are getting out of hand meanwhile Gabe keeps winning and Steam consoles both Machine and Deck 2 will be out in 2028 just set it to emulate.

    1. Why would you boycott a company for making a product you don’t like? It’s like if I bought a disney movie at the store, hated it, and then boycotted the company for making a product. That just doesn’t make sense. People can have opinions, people can like or hate a product, but you shouldn’t boycott a company for making a product you personally don’t like.

      1. Here is how I see a boycott. If a company entertained you for a long time and suddenly made a bad game, you can say that you will not buy any game from them for as long as this trend in quality stays. That is a boycott. If the company then makes a game, that is your standard in quality, you can say “Okay, this is when I support you again.” And, of course, the company will laugh at you for boycotting them, because so many people will buy their product, but that doesn’t matter. You made a line in the sand and you stay to it. That is all that matters and if that is a boycott for YOURSELF, that is fine. It won’t change anything, but for you, it means something and who knows, maybe some other people will do the same. It is all up to the people what they do, in the end. And if a company fails and goes down because of a boycott, which could happen, then it is a simple result of natural selection.

          1. You can boycott a company or a person for so many reasons. It just needs one good point to do this and you don’t need to agree with others. It is your opinion, your line in the sand, your boycott to say “No, I will not support this.” The reason doesn’t matter, it is what it means to you and if others think the same, so be it. In the end, the company might feel it, but in most cases, they won’t. The only case I can remember, where a company broke under a boycott, was Gillette and Budweiser for their adds. They lost billions because of that. So yeah, you a boycott can be successful or not like with the Mario movies.

  4. This has a good and a bad side and people have talked about it since there is light. If someone sales something for a platform, they can control it, they can manipulate the people who come and buys. But that is also the bad side of it. This means, you have to go out of your way to get what you want, while on a system with all on it, you don’t have to. But, on a system, that supports all, the danger is given that a product simply sinks under the weight of competition and vanishes forever. Then, there is the price point. A company can take any price for their products on their own system, but this can scare the customer away, while on a wide market place, a smaller price can mean a bigger success, for example Pal World or Shovel Knight. But in the end, it only comes to the customer if they choose the one system or the other.

As for me, I choose not to buy third party games on my Switch but only Nintendo games IF third party games are only on Switch, which are not always the case, which makes me angry because a PC is in most cases better in playing them than the Switch.

But yeah, Miyamoto is right. People will only buy a console or a console from Nintendo if Nintendo is able to make good games… and that was not the case for many of them lately. But the biggest problem is not the console in itself, but the NOS and paywall problems in their games. If I only think of Animal Crossing and the need for NOS to play a SIMPLY NES game, it makes me mad. I have nothing about DLC if it is good, but this take the cake. This makes me stop playing the game, because had I knew this, I wouldn’t support into the game in the first place. This, as like the whole gamepass nonsense, that robbed us so many retro games, which I rather would buy for 10 to 20 bucks than for 60 bucks for rent. This might break Nintendos neck and it wouldn’t be the first time that Nintendo almost broke its neck with a dumb idea.
