Nintendo nearly gave Yoshi his own movie

Nintendo‘s Shigeru Miyamoto has spoken to Famitsu about the incredibly successful The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and one thing of note is that the Kyoto-based company almost gave Yoshi his very own movie. Miyamoto says Yoshi was a natural fit for the movie but initially there was a discussion to make a separate movie about Yoshi getting involved in various incidents in New York. Here’s a machine translated version:

“As for Yoshi, I really wanted to include him in the film, but he didn’t have a role in the first film. In the first game, several Yoshis appeared when Yoshi passed through Yoshi’s Island on his journey to the Jungle Kingdom, and I wanted to use them, so I brought them out as eggs at the end of the previous game. So, what happened to the Yoshi who stayed in New York? During production, there was an idea to make a separate movie just about Yoshi getting involved in various incidents in New York, but we settled on the current format. It was really fun to go back and forth with Matthew about these things, and to incorporate elements from the first game and develop the roles of each character in a way that is uniquely Nintendo.”

  1. Very happy they didn’t do that. The sequence was funny. But a Yoshi In New York movie would have ended up leaning way more “Illumination” than “Nintendo”
