Nintendo recently held its shareholders question and answer sessions and there were plenty of questions from eager shareholders. One of those addressed to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa were his thoughts on Gen AI. Mr. Furukawa said that there are various issues with gen AI including environmental issues and copyright issues. From what he said it doesn’t seem as though he’s a fan of the technology. Here’s what was said via machine translation:
Question: There are various issues surrounding generative AI. Some generative AI systems have been developed using illegally obtained training data, including unauthorized learning. I would like you to state clearly that you will not use such systems. Please explain your approach to AI and how you are working with it.
Answer: Regulations are advancing in various countries, and we comply with the laws in each jurisdiction. As for generative AI, Nintendo has long used AI-like technologies in game development, such as programs that control enemy character behavior. However, the generative AI that has become a major topic in recent years comes with many challenges, including issues related to power consumption. As a company, we carefully assess these technologies and take appropriate action to ensure that they do not infringe on intellectual property rights.
I personally don’t see Nintendo encouraging the use of gen ai for coding games. Their craftsman-like perspective on game development appears to me to be antithetical to having a bunch of code you can barely review make 50+% of your game.
AI is a giant tug of war between all companies, everyone is trying to get a slice of the pie. But one day, the rope will break and everyone on each side will fall. I am glad nintendo is smart enough to avoid this war.

Just want to say they could be using it already I think Pokémon has been accused of it but the thing is they don’t have to disclose it only games on Steam have to disclose it so Nintendo may already be using GenAI I think From Software uses it, Nintendo owns a share of Bandai Namco who is all in on AI and is a Nintendo partner studio. After Metroid Prime 4’s long wait and cost I think they’d want to reduce that and never have that happen again.
I have nothing against AI. Really as long it’s not used to replace real world actors or actresses or used to replace animators, graphic designers or artists. I understand many of them are very concerned about it and the future of the world of tech or science.
I agree. If AI was simply used for just productivity tools that helped create products quicker, I would be totally fine with it. But the anoying thing about AI for is that so many companies are focuinsg more on AI rather then their actual products. I used to be an xbox fan, but slowly xbox just gave up and slowed down their game output to oblivion as they focused more on AI, which made me give up on them.
AI can be used to amazing things, but the current state of it is a mixed bag.
Companies really need to understand that AI is not something to mess around with all the time. They could use the AI tool to solved current word events or problems instead of just using it for video games or animation movies or live action movies. People say AI is here to stay because they do not comprehend the sheer scope of the house of cards it is built on. Unlike the internet which relied on low voltage, decentralized circuits, and end user buy-in, AI depends on a baseline wattage that is pragmatically inconceivable, centralized power clusters, and shareholder investment. There’s a distinction between copyright (formally applied for), and intellectual property which any piece of art can possess without going through an office. If Nintendo was truly respectful of art and artists and its ownership, regardless of copyright status, they would denounce genAI instead of giving their non-answer.

I will never praise generative AI, or AI that is used to replace people like artists or voice actors (especially the latter, because that’s something I want to do). AI has its uses, but NEVER in those two areas.

I really love how he actually differentiates ai technology and generative ai. When people hear ai they assume it’s all bad, what’s bad is generative. We don’t want ai to replace art. But technological ai has been and always will be important.
