Nintendo recently held its shareholders question and answer sessions and there were plenty of questions from eager shareholders. One of those addressed to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa were his thoughts on Gen AI. Mr. Furukawa said that there are various issues with gen AI including environmental issues and copyright issues. From what he said it doesn’t seem as though he’s a fan of the technology. Here’s what was said via machine translation:
Question: There are various issues surrounding generative AI. Some generative AI systems have been developed using illegally obtained training data, including unauthorized learning. I would like you to state clearly that you will not use such systems. Please explain your approach to AI and how you are working with it.
Answer: Regulations are advancing in various countries, and we comply with the laws in each jurisdiction. As for generative AI, Nintendo has long used AI-like technologies in game development, such as programs that control enemy character behavior. However, the generative AI that has become a major topic in recent years comes with many challenges, including issues related to power consumption. As a company, we carefully assess these technologies and take appropriate action to ensure that they do not infringe on intellectual property rights.

I personally don’t see Nintendo encouraging the use of gen ai for coding games. Their craftsman-like perspective on game development appears to me to be antithetical to having a bunch of code you can barely review make 50+% of your game.
AI is a giant tug of war between all companies, everyone is trying to get a slice of the pie. But one day, the rope will break and everyone on each side will fall. I am glad nintendo is smart enough to avoid this war.
They didn’t say yes or no they payed Fiy. Curious if they are using it every major studio is using it. Here’s the thing the same losers saying they’re against it will still support Nintendo no matter what look at the GTA crowd they’re still buying that AI game that costs $100 for all features with no online and digital only. Key cards are a great example look how many complain and still buy it then complain again.

Care to elaborate more about it?
Yessir. That’s my GOATs
They’re using AI already just no confirmation of GenAI if they are or will use it in the future Yiy going to stop supporting them or still buying that AI like the dumb little pay pig you are?
Bro, you didn’t read the description.

I can’t wait for the inevitable demise of AI
💓
That’s never going to happen also gaming is built on AI always has been same with all technology if you hate it that much go move to the rainforest instead of living with technology and using the internet
The problem with AI is that artist or graphic design artists worried that it could affect their business or interfere with their work that they have worked on hardly.
Don’t hold your breathe. Lol
I really hope they continue not to use it, stay GOATed Nintendo
They never said no they played coy like the other companies that actively use it
Yes same here.
Goat’d Nintendo death to genAI slop graaaaghhhh
Clueless parrots: Let’s all blame AI for high component costs since I have no clue what I’m talking about.
Also parrots: let’s keep copying moronic people who keep saying AI slop when I have no clue what it refers to.. hurr durr 🤪
These are the idiots controlling the world we live in the voters and leaders a bunch of stupid woke middle aged millennials. The sooner we take away all rights from them the better they are boomer 2.0 and Gen X also sucks since they defend this stuff from radicalism.

I still think an AI chatbot for Animal Crossing could be dope. Have different logs and personalities for each villager. No more characters who say the same thing or repeat dialogue
But LLMs are just “parrots” and don’t actually understand anything according to a bunch of clueless people.
Too bad there’s a bunch of intelligent people at Google and other companies showing it’s not true, even John Carmack is for AI.
People pushing back against it are blindly following nonsense spouted online, or mad because they can’t buy cheap DDR5 anymore. Maybe try blaming the RAM companies for once.. this isn’t the first time they’ve colluded on pricing.
The issue is people can’t think for themselves, it’s baffling how many just believe any old crap and can’t be bothered to do their own research.

Just want to say they could be using it already I think Pokémon has been accused of it but the thing is they don’t have to disclose it only games on Steam have to disclose it so Nintendo may already be using GenAI I think From Software uses it, Nintendo owns a share of Bandai Namco who is all in on AI and is a Nintendo partner studio. After Metroid Prime 4’s long wait and cost I think they’d want to reduce that and never have that happen again.
I have nothing against AI. Really as long it’s not used to replace real world actors or actresses or used to replace animators, graphic designers or artists. I understand many of them are very concerned about it and the future of the world of tech or science.
I agree. If AI was simply used for just productivity tools that helped create products quicker, I would be totally fine with it. But the anoying thing about AI for is that so many companies are focuinsg more on AI rather then their actual products. I used to be an xbox fan, but slowly xbox just gave up and slowed down their game output to oblivion as they focused more on AI, which made me give up on them.
AI can be used to amazing things, but the current state of it is a mixed bag.
Gen AI in a game = no sale for me. Ever.
People say AI is here to stay because they do not comprehend the sheer scope of the house of cards it is built on. Unlike the internet which relied on low voltage, decentralized circuits, and end user buy-in, AI depends on a baseline wattage that is pragmatically inconceivable, centralized power clusters, and shareholder investment. It is not some guarantee it will continue to exist and the ethical problems associated with it are on par with genocide due to the knock-on consequences.
