Earlier this week Xbox revealed that it had a big reshuffle of its internal studios and that the acclaimed Rare will now be under and reporting to Activision. The Game Business is reporting that the move has sparked a few cuts to Rare’s central operations team. However, as expected, Rare is currently working on other projects besides Sea of Thieves. Whether these will be multiplatform remains to be seen.
Rare is behind Sea of Thieves. The pirate game has been a decent success, but it has been declining over the last few years. In 2025, Rare’s Everwild project was cancelled, which led to some redundancies. However, the studio was able to mitigate that by cutting back on outsourcing, and moving staff onto Sea of Thieves. As a result of its Activision move, there have been a few cuts to Rare’s central operations team. The studio is working on other projects.

What an absolute mess. It’s pretty sad what has happened to Rare since leaving Nintendo, those really were the glory years of the company. Sure there have been a few decent things during the Microsoft era but it’s mostly been disappointing and nowhere near what they were in the SNES and N64 days. It will never be like that again as I can’t imagine anyone from those times is still there and those that have come in since are not at that level. We’ll always have those great games from the 90’s though
They should just give the IP for banjo and others to Nintendo since they’re dormant at RARE

Will if you made a Banjo-Threeie and continued with the franchise and stayed with Nintendo then a Rare wouldnt be in the situation it is now. How does Rare allow themselves to be bought my Microsoft and still broke?
