Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told investors that no one can replace Shigeru Miyamoto. Miyamoto was mentioned due to the retirement rumours that circulated late last year, which both Iwata and Miyamoto have categorically denied. Iwata stressed that younger developers who were previously under Miyamoto’s wing have now been allowed to work independently from the revered developer.
“Of course, no single person can replace Mr. Miyamoto instantaneously. They are living in a different age from Mr. Miyamoto and their experiences are different from Mr. Miyamoto’s. On the other hand, there have been many people who have observed how Mr. Miyamoto works, have worked with him or have been left in situations where they have to take on more significant responsibility without being allowed to be dependent upon Mr. Miyamoto.

You’re saying Nintendo has no innovation? Ha! Let’s reverse the clock shall we? Who basically, nearly single-handedly saved video games from the great Video Game Crash? Hmmm…not very difficult is it? Nintendo (with Super Mario Bros).
Who defined what platformers are? Nintendo with Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. Who greatly helped shape RPG adventure games? Nintendo, with Zelda. Which game is the most successful of all times? Oh ya a Nintendo game. I could go on and on and on but you’d have to be pretty stupid to see that Nintendo are the true masters at designing games. Also if it wasn’t for Nintendo, Xbox and PlayStation wouldn’t have D-Pads or motion controls or a half-dozen other innovations.
Nintendo may have launched the 3DS poorly, they admitted it themselves. They weren’t ready. But one need only look at the holiday sales and see that, now that they have the games (like Mario 3D Land) they’re back on track. Nobody gets things perfect all of the time. Xbox certainly doesn’t and PlayStation don’t either. Nintendo mightn’t make what are seen as the perceivably ‘cool’ games with world-shattering graphics…no, instead they design games that are fun. That’s what a game should be, fun. And you know Wii Sports is fun, Wii Music to some people is fun, Mario is fun regardless of age, gender or whatever. Pokemon is fun. Mario Kart is the best multiplayer game ever, these are just some of the vast catalogue of fun games Nintendo makes. Nearly all of Nintendo games are entertaining to everybody. PlayStation and Xbox are far too narrow and half the time more about the graphics than anything else. If you want great graphics go see a movie, if you want fun play Nintendo.

Mario 64 was the first 3D game and set the standard for how 3D platformers work, there have been lots of games that are virtually clones in that they copy Mario 64 so much. Ocarina of Time was very much the same.
Wii sports, created by Miyamoto, set the way for fitness games on consoles and look how kinect and PSMove have copied nintendo in that effect.
Miyamoto is still going strong in innovation.

I think what he means is he can’t just get up and leave. I think what he’s doing now is what he needs to, working on smaller projects and making sure Nintendo can continue survive without him. because whatever happens he’ll leave eventually, and Nintendo can’t let that affect them, or make their investors lose faith in them.
Actually, that is not a very good thing, alas i can’t understand why people think its something to cheer for. If the man, by any means, happens to fall sick or bite the dust (hopefully not), we’d have nobody capable of making up to the name Shigeru Miyamoto? Honestly, I think they’re overexagerating a bit on this topic. There are more than just a handful of creative and able people out there to take his place. As long as Nintendo tries to stay true to their ideals of gaming (except the “family gaming” thing they have been trying to establish), all will be good. Miyamoto left us enough to work for in the future.

Robhc, really? let me list some of them: mario 64, OoT, Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Majora’s Mask, Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, and these are just some of the truly amazing games (and only the 3d ones in the Mario and The legend of Zelda series) he has taken part in since the 90s. and i do see what iwata means, it would take years of practice and experience to be able to have just the sheer expertise of miyamoto. rather than say something fanboyish about How amazing he is, let me just say this: without miyamot, nintendo would not have most of their IPs, and Microsoft would be king. (sony most likely wouldn’t Have any consoles, or would have just started making them, if it weren’t for the fact that nintendo hired them to help with the PlayStation, but when nintendo backed out they changed it to Playstation and sold it as their own.) Miyamoto is an extremely skilled designer and one of the greats, and nobody can replace hin without an exceptionally large amount of effort.

Miyamoto will be replaced. It will happen. It will have to happen. But no one will last as long as he has, no one will be able to create as many great games as he has. But he will be replaced. Nintendo, nay, video gaming as a whole depends on it.
