Martin Hollis, the director behind the acclaimed GoldenEye 64 told attendees at GDC Europe that the incredibly addictive multiplayer component was built within a month, and had no prior approval from the management at Rare, or Nintendo.
“It was done without the knowledge or permissions of the management at Rare and Nintendo, he laughed, noting that if the team had not put it together on the sly before showing it to management, there’s no way it would have been allowed — the game was already late as it was.”
And that’s exactly why Nintendo sold Rare, they took too long to make their games
No, that’s not why. Nintendo prides itself on quality, and never hesitates to delay a game for that reason. Nintendo takes longer than Rare making games sometimes. They sold them ’cause their games just weren’t selling anymore. And they used that money for bigger and better things (I think Retro Studios was part of that).
A lot of the good developers went to (what is now) Crytek UK, and Retro.
No, it’s because the Stamper bros. had 51% stake of the company and sold it to Microsoft. Nintendo, who had 49% had no choice but to sell the rest to M$.
A shame that Microsoft bought them. Rare’s games seemed suited for Nintendo.
Nintendo was offered to buy the 51% too, they chose not to and then Microsoft did it. Nintendo’s own fault.
Also: Thank god they did that multiplayer in, it’s legendary.
lol good one but not the case then again
And yet they’re expecting 3 years MINIMUM for the next SSB game to be developed.

That’s a tacked-in multiplayer actually done right.
Better than a lot of multiplayer which was given serious work… A system that was perfected in TimeSplitters!
cool story bro
it was very guds, but all shooters not on nintendo consoles are bads and danger
The only thing “bads and danger” is your grammar
Looks like we have another troll to ban.
The amount of idiots and fanboys is too damn high!

Rome wasn’t built in a day, but some of the greatest memories of the 5th generation of gaming were built in a month.
Seriously, this is amazing, makes the game even more epic.
A multiplayer built in a month, that they didt have permission for, thats became one of the most celebrated multiplayers of all time.
Talk about showing up modern developers.
In a way, this was an extremely successful case of indie development (since it was done out of Rare mgmt. and Nintendo’s view).
One of the best secretly-added features of any game I’ve ever played.
Nintendo should overlook things like this more often.XD
so that’s why four playes was sloppy thanks 14 years later
Just goes to show you that management doesn’t always know best.
PS Virtual Console. Please, please put this on VC. Sort out the rights issues and just do it, Nintendo.
Maybe the management leaders etc etc should listen to their employees from time to time.
I bet I’m one of the many millions that enjoyed the multiplayer part at the time ;)
GoldenEye007 was Game of the Year back in 1997… and it’s STILL the best game from Nintendo and Rare.
Eh, I prefer Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo-Tooie :P
Speaking of DK64, my latest review. Awesome game developed by Rare. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0oxyC_lNpE
Yet Nintendo are the same people responsible for games as highly rated as TLoZ OoT and Super Mario 64. Eh, all to opinion. I feel Perfect Dark is better than Goldeneye, though.
Couldn’t agree more. I have never played another multiplayer game that could beat goldeneye007. There are good games out there but not as good.
hahaha nice going
niiiiice! I loved Goldeneye, that was an awesome multiplayer game! Guess being able to make a game without the permission of the companies are sometimes a great idea.
Does it really matter?
Golden Eye hasn’t aged well, Rare has gone gone downhill and Banjo just killed himself.
Why so ser– never mind.
God….could you imagine Goldeneye without the multiplayer? Do you think the industry would have taken a slightly different turn?

Well I think everyone would agree it was a good idea to go behind Nintendo’s back and do this. It worked out well for all involved. Leave luck to heaven.
